“If someone is ranting and raging getting them to stop and sit down is difficult because all the energy is moving rapidly and strongly. Telling them to calm down rarely works. Adrenaline is surging and they are not in a glorious state of mind, obviously. Better to be angry with them than at them. Side with them. Agree they are angry and have a right to feel that way. Yes, it seems difficult to do.

But do it. Don’t add to their stress and anger by opposing it. Get this. Side with them. Take a position next to them instead of in front of them. Tell them they have a right to be angry and that they will or together you will find the appropriate, positive solution. It even helps if you approximate their anger at first, tone and tempo while agreeing with them and then slowly calm yourself down.

Match them at first and then slowly, subtly deescalate the situation by gradually becoming calmer. All this signals them you are there for them. You are on their side. They’re not wrong. And that getting calm again is possible without directly telling them to calm down. Behaviorally show them by relaxing slowly and gradually. This can absolutely help. Another method is encourage them to walk.

Have them walk with you so they aren’t anchored to a place or position. Create movement. They  have to walk it off and slow down. They must change their breathing gradually to deescalate. They need to shift their body eventually into neutral. Really think about it. Watch someone get over being angry, watch the ‘unwind’, the release, the eventual ‘let go’ and the breathing changes. Remember?

Sometimes, you may need to cool down. You are best served if you understand how to do it in advance of when you need it. To learn to do it in advance of needing it is to successfully utilize your resources. Remember the motto, ‘always be prepared’. When you know what to do before you need it, you’re better able to navigate any circumstance. You are redirecting energy. It’s mental aikido!

‘To enjoy enduring success one must travel in advance of the world.’ An important practice EMT  paramedics know is that when someone has a sudden change of circumstances (for example an accident but they aren’t injured) the body pumps adrenaline. Adrenaline provides us energy for fight or flight. Adrenaline is not what you need to learn or relax. So what to do with all this adrenaline?

Safely, walk it off. In the olden jungle days, when we hunted and gathered, we probably had more encounters or reasons for our body to flood us with adrenaline. Today, in our cubicle world of artificial lights and computers we have less physical threats or events that require sudden adrenaline release. Still, a perceived threat, an imagined threat results in adrenaline being pumped.

When someone is flooding with adrenaline the paramedic knows not to have them sit down or lie down but tells them to walk it off in a safe place. They may gently walk with them so the person is safe and does not wander into traffic or fall.  They move them to a safe area and walk with them.

The body needs time to release and process the adrenaline and eventually return to normal. Sitting or lying down first is not the correct thing to do. Walk it off until you CAN sit or lie down. If you know this you know you can walk it off when enraged. Awareness is the key to change. The practice of counting to 10 before getting angry is a useful practice. Breathe. Breathe. Shift to neutral. Relax.

Sigh. Breathe. Pause. Pause. Pause and shift into a more resourceful state. Start thinking and speaking positive affirmations instead of reciting the reasons you are enraged. Start focusing on positive aspects of the situation, yourself and life. Focus on the silver lining and what you are grateful for. Pat yourself on noticing and changing your state. Anchor in positive resources.

Imagine resolving anger positively in the future. Future pace yourself. Imagine other times and places where you may need to calm yourself down and imagine it fully in your imagination. Act as if and rehearse and practice getting unstuck, over fear, over worry and anger. Practice what you want before you need it. It works. Create new positive habits. Wire it in.
