“Some people are skeptical and that is okay. Skepticism can be and is healthy. It means being open to checking things out and not just accepting what others tell you. If you do vet the information and discover it false, good for you. If you find it correct, good for you. At least you are attempting to find and use accurate information. It saves you lots of time and issues. A healthy dose of skepticism is not a bad thing when you use it to investigate more.

Skepticism is defined as: ‘a doubting or questioning attitude or state of mind; dubiety. (Dubiety simply means doubt). The ancient school of Pyrrho of Elis that stressed the uncertainty of our beliefs to oppose dogmatism.’ Cynicism on the other hand is not good. It means you’re closed to incoming information right or wrong. Cynicism can and will hold you back and prevent you from seeking accurate information. You end up holding yourself back.

It’s defined as: ‘an attitude of scornful or jaded negativity, especially a general distrust of the integrity or professed motives of others. Originating from the beliefs of the ancient Cynics.’ When presented with new and potentially beneficial information, principles or practices the cynic is negative, closed and perhaps derogatory. A closed mind, that doesn’t allow new things in, doesn’t allow for change. Get it? Skepticism ok. Cynicism, not.

DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF

If you want to change you must be open to the notion that change is possible. You must be willing to change. Some want change but are unwilling to change or entertain the very practices and principles that can lead to change. If you aren’t willing to change or willing to learn there isn’t much hope for intentional transformation until the individual changes and becomes willing to learn and willing to change. Many think they are open but are not.

Many claim to be willing to learn but shut down quickly when presented with notions they aren’t sure about. That’s why it’s okay to be skeptical but not cynical. If you shut down and shut out the possibility of accepting it, thinking and acting on it, what’s the likelihood you’ll do anything with it. If you are at least willing to check it out or entertain it, there is hope. People think they know, when they don’t know. This is an area to examine.

People think, ‘I already know this.’ They are wrong and only a little bit correct. They may know something about it but they don’t KNOW all of it. Just because it seems the same as the knowledge you already possess doesn’t mean it is or that you understand it. You recognize it but unless you are applying it and getting the results from application, you don’t really know it. You know something about it. People jump to conclusions that they know.

DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF

They assert. They think they know but they don’t. It’s like reading a book on bike riding and the act of riding a bike. Those are two different things. The brain is used differently. They may seem familiar, and you may know about bike riding, but you haven’t the experience of riding one. Certainly, for both people they don’t know everything about bike riding, nor have they experienced everything. Still, people lump things together.

To be teachable, to be coachable, to be willing to learn and change you must be willing to learn and change and be willing to be coachable and teachable. When a mentor speaks, if you say, ‘I know that’ or you begin to talk about what you think you know, you impress no one. If I told an Olympic athlete my opinion of her or his abilities, if I share my opinions and actual lack of knowledge there is no reason for them to listen.

While they may be polite, my opinion doesn’t reach the level or value of their experience, their opinion or their ability to coach me. It’d be best to listen, understand as much as possible, be open and apply what they coach me in, and attempt to gain the experience they are providing. For me to tell them what I think I know or tell them. ‘Gotcha,’ ‘I know that’ ‘got it’ is meaningless. No offense to a reader who may balk at this, but it is, really.

DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF

Who cares what I already know, or got, or anything if I am coming to them to learn. Listen, absorb. Be humble, not to them but stop with the ego that says, ‘I am going to tell you that I know what you do and how you do it.’ Listen instead. Speak less, listen more. Apply what you learn. Stop being closed. Stop trying to demonstrate you know something about their area of expertise. When the master speaks the student listens. Get experience.

It isn’t about an info exchange; it’s about being willing to learn and change. If you attempt to assert what you know you are not open to learn and change. Get this and you will benefit greatly going forward. Recognize when you close. Recognize when, for whatever reason, you feel you must share your opinion when your opinion doesn’t matter. You think it does, but it doesn’t. recognize when you exclaim, ‘got it.’ Because you really don’t.

You haven’t. You just think you know it. As I said you may know something about it but that is not the same as saying ‘I got it’ or ‘I get it.’ Get it? If you said yes, hmmm. Get it? Learning is an opportunity to go beyond what you already know. So, what you already know isn’t that relevant. While you may think it is, it isn’t. Stay one for what you could possibly learn so you can learn it. Stop shutting down. Be willing to change and to apply it.

Be willing to learn. Learning is being available to differences. Learning is not just putting things into what you know and building on it AND yes, it is sometimes that too. Learning can be an epiphany when things seem to instantly assemble in a gleeful ‘AHA’ or it can be like mastery, a lifelong process of trial and error, improvement moving forward and stagnant plateaus. Either way it is a process and not necessarily how we learned in school.

School thwarted learning in favor of memorization. Yes, we learned to memorize and accomplish certain tasks, but it wasn’t about learning how to learn, how to think, how to be open to change and to transform. You were to learn to read and write, do some math, know these topics, repeat back the correct answers and go get a job. Not bad but not that good either. Learning to learn is so important because it’s the doorway to transformation.

Do you think your opinion of enlightenment which you haven’t experienced though you may have had ‘awakenings’ is relevant or interesting to one who is enlightened. Do you think it matters to Jesus, Buddha, Lao Tao or Mohammed what your opinion is on their teachings and how much you get of it? This is not to draw a line between them and you or others, it is to illustrate a point. We are all already enlightened. So what?

DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF

I’ve struggled with this. I desperately wanted to get things. I want to show I got it. We all do. When in the presence of someone you want to learn from there’s no need to demonstrate what you know. Just be grateful to have the opportunity, vow to remain open best as possible and do as instructed. Be willing to learn and be coachable. It’s an incredible opportunity. It may be the transformative opportunity of a lifetime. Be filled with gratitude, enthusiasm and be open and available. Have a good time. Keep your energy and optimism up. Take advantage of the opportunity. More to come. Enjoy the day and beyond. Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
