“Stop calling it self-sabotage: It’s time to take control of your programming. I address this issue/nonissue in my book ‘Life on Your Terms’. Get it and read about it. As an example, if you consistently procrastinate on important tasks or tell yourself you’re not good enough, you might think you’re sabotaging your own progress. But here’s the truth: that’s not self-sabotage. Yes, I know you’ve been led to think it is, but it isn’t. Get over it.
It’s you doing exactly what’s most important to you based on your programming. If completing those tasks was your absolute obsession, if they mattered deeply, you’d do them. What you mistakenly label as self-sabotage is really you fulfilling the programming you’ve learned over time. You’re not sabotaging yourself. You’re doing what you’ve been conditioned to do. Sadly, psychologists have promoted and normalized this stupidity.
Take responsibility for your actions and lack of them. Stop blaming yourself for so-called self-sabotage and recognize that you’re following through on what matters most to you, whether it’s productive or not. You’re fulfilling your intentions, not undermining them. If you’ve made your bed, complaining about lying in it isn’t going to help. Want a different outcome? Then it’s time to reprogram yourself. Accept this: you are not broken.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
You are not sabotaging yourself. You are fulfilling the habits, beliefs, and patterns you’ve learned. If you want a different life, then change your programming. Don’t settle for the idea that you’re stuck or doomed by ‘limiting beliefs.’ Those beliefs aren’t just excuses, they’re part of the same learned programming that’s holding you back. Those beliefs ARE limiting beliefs if you understand it. Know this: Change begins with ownership.
If you want something enough, you’ll make it happen. I’ve pointed out numerous times that Muhammad Ali said, ‘I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.’ He didn’t blame limiting beliefs, the weather, or the economy for his struggles. He owned his situation and committed to becoming the greatest. You need to do the same.
Stop blaming the universe, god, others, or even your own mind. Instead, take responsibility. Decide what you want, build the beliefs, develop the conviction, and stoke the passion to get it done. Napoleon Hill taught that a lukewarm desire brings lukewarm results. A little fire offers little heat. If you’re lukewarm about what you want, it’s no wonder you’re not moving forward. So, turn up the heat. Create a raging fire within.

Your brain does what it knows. Your brain isn’t against you. It’s not trying to sabotage you. It’s protecting you. It’s doing exactly what it was programmed to do. The problem is that your programming was built over years of repetition, habits, and learned behaviors that no longer serve you. The brain can’t do what it hasn’t learned to do. So, if you want different results, you need to teach it new habits, patterns, and beliefs.
Here’s the good news: you can change your programming. But it requires commitment and action. Stop the excuses. Telling yourself, ‘It’s easier said than done,’ is just another limiting belief. Face your discomfort. Limiting beliefs, fear, and doubt arise whenever you encounter the edge of your comfort zone. Instead of retreating, understand that this is a protective mechanism. Your brain is trying to keep you safe and consistent.
Rather than insulting yourself for these thoughts and feelings, appreciate them for what they are, a natural response to change. Then, take steps to rewrite, rewire, and reprogram your mind. Here’s how to change your programming. If you’re tired of driving with your foot on the brake, here’s how to start greasing the wheel: Stop the Criticism Constant self-criticism only reinforces old patterns.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
Instead, find ways to appreciate yourself. Your brain is doing its job. It just needs better instructions. So, update the instructions instead of getting down on yourself for old programming. Your brain works perfectly well doing what it learned and knows to do. Want it different? Then make the changes necessary to have it different. Adopt New Beliefs Limiting beliefs are learned. They aren’t permanent.
Replace them with empowering beliefs that align with what you want to achieve. Take Incremental Action
Change doesn’t happen overnight. Start with small, consistent steps that move you closer to your goals. Build Passion and Commitment If your desire is lukewarm, it won’t sustain you. Develop a strong, emotional connection to your goals. Let them become an obsession. Rewrite Your Narrative
Stop calling it self-sabotage and start calling it what it really is: programming that needs updating. When you change your story, you change your results. Stop the whining, start the winning (which was originally part of the title to ‘Life on Your Terms’)*. Complaining about why you procrastinate or why you’re stuck won’t get you anywhere new. It only perpetuates the cycle you’re already in.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
If you want something different, you need to do something different. When you encounter resistance, those doubts, fears, and limiting beliefs, it’s your opportunity to grow. Celebrate them. They come up so you CAN release them. Let them go. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY AND BLESSING only you weren’t led to believe this. You were led to whine, complain, blame others and yourself. It’s time to change all that.
Instead of lamenting, get over it. Act in your own best interest. Change your thinking, and your life will follow. You can have a new path forward. Rewiring your brain isn’t easy, some would say. That’s a belief too. Does it serve you to think it will be difficult? Perhaps, it’s good to think it might be tough, so you aren’t frustrated if it isn’t easy. Get it? Your expectations shape what you find. Make your beliefs serve you.
So, even if it might be difficult, it’s worth it. If you want it enough, as Ali demonstrated, then you can have it if you are willing to be passionate enough about having it. Know that each step you take down a different path leads to new experiences, new results, and a new life. Appreciate yourself for the progress you’ve made, even if it’s not perfect. Stop lamenting the past and start building the future. You’re not sabotaging yourself!
