“Go back in your mind. Let’s continue the exercise from the last blog. Go back.  Rewind one of those moments. Not your biggest blowout, just a mild one. Maybe it was a conversation that turned sideways. A disappointment that knocked the wind out of you. One of those everyday moments when, for a brief second, you felt like you lost your footing, emotionally, mentally.

Now sit in your mental theater and watch it unfold, like a film. The story is moving forward, and then you see it, that moment. The very point where you used to tighten, to shrink, to snap, to spiral. Pause the movie right there. And this time, see yourself breathe. A big, deep, powerful inhale. And a sigh on the exhale. Now do it again. And again. Watch that you on the inner screen deliberately shift your breathing. Take a pause.

In that moment, right there, you’ve changed the trajectory of the entire experience. You didn’t fight the emotion. You didn’t ignore it. You used it. You redirected it. Just like Aikido, you guided the energy without resistance, and now, the outcome is different. Now imagine the same experience but this time see it from your eyes, hear with your ears, feel it. Be in the experience. See, hear or feel the ‘trigger’ and shift.

Mentally rehearse the scenario where you would have gotten stuck but this time you become aware, remember to shift, and you do shift. Take a deep breath. Interrupt the trigger, the pattern. Break the states and shift into the new one through your breathing change. Sigh. Let it go. Do this repeatedly to practice it and wire it in. You can go back and forth between the experience & the movie screen adjusting.

Make it better and better. Feel the change. See yourself how you look on the movie screen when you go from less than resourceful, or stuck, to breaking the old state and moving into a resourceful one. This isn’t a theory. This is neurobiology. You can feel and experience it if you will just do it. And if you practice it you can get good at it and wire it in as a new, positive, powerful skill. Plus, research backs it up, of course.

Research published in Cognitive, Affective, & Behavioral Neuroscience shows that conscious breathwork, paired with intentional physical shifts in posture, increases activity in the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for executive function, wise decision-making, and emotional regulation (Goldin et al., 2012).
