“Congratulations! It’s a new year, and we’ve made it together. This is your time to hit the reset button, start fresh, and claim the life you’ve always envisioned. If you’re like most people, you’ve made resolutions to improve your life. Excellent! Let’s use this fresh start to your advantage. Let me show you how to make lasting changes and keep those resolutions alive long after January fades. You do want to succeed, do you not?
Many people rush into resolutions, like joining a gym or starting a new habit, only to abandon them a few weeks later. Why? Old habits resist change. It’s not because you’re weak or lack willpower. It’s because of inertia, the tendency for things to stay the same unless acted upon by a stronger force. Here’s the good news: You can overcome this natural resistance with the right tools and strategies.
Inertia works both ways. Once you’ve built new habits, inertia helps them stick. So, learn to change your thinking and create your best life! The key is taking consistent action until those new habits become automatic. How do you do that? By making small, manageable changes that you can maintain over time. Let’s break it down. Emily was one of my students who struggled with procrastination and self-doubt.

Every year, she set ambitious resolutions but gave up by February, feeling defeated. When she joined my program, we focused on one small change: dedicating just five minutes daily to a priority task. That’s it! Five minutes. At first, she doubted it would make a difference. But as she stayed consistent, five minutes turned into ten, then thirty. Within three months, she’d built the confidence and momentum to tackle larger goals.
By year’s end, Emily had launched her dream business, a goal she’d abandoned countless times before. It’s bite by bite. You’ve heard the saying, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” Don’t overwhelm yourself with massive changes. Pick one goal and break it into small, achievable steps. Want to get healthier? Start with a short walk daily. Want to save money? Skip that daily latte and put the money in a jar. Get it. Small steps.
Want to improve relationships? Commit to one kind gesture or heartfelt conversation a day. These small changes add up. Consistency creates transformation. When you make the steps meaningful but small enough to easily perform you are more apt to do them. The idea is to set yourself up to win, not lose. ‘Don’t bite off more than you can chew.’ That’s another saying you most likely know. Keep in mind. winners get good at winning.

When you consistently take bite by bite you win. You get to your destination step by step. You keep going because it’s easy enough. AND as you continue, you succeed and that creates the desire to do more. This becomes a cycle. Small steps, consistently taken in the same direction can take you to the top of Mt Everest. You create momentum. Some call it a momentum cycle. The more you do, the more you can do.
The more you win, the more you enjoy winning so you keep going. Too much, too fast, too soon, too hard, people tend to give up too soon. When you complain, you practice complaining. When you criticize yourself, you reinforce doubt. Stop practicing negativity. Instead, focus on gratitude, optimism, and self-belief. Transform your thoughts and you can skyrocket your abundance. The more you CAN do the more capable you become. Get it?
Another student, Raj, constantly interfered with his progress by negative self-talk: “I’ll never succeed,” or “What’s the point?” Like many, negative self-talk will take the wind from your sails. Research from Dr. Wendy Wood at USC shows that habits account for 43% of our daily actions.
The key to lasting change is rewiring your brain through repetition and positive reinforcement. Each time you repeat a behavior, you strengthen neural pathways, making the behavior automatic. Here’s the driver that makes it all come together; Celebrate Each Small Win. When you acknowledge your progress, your brain releases dopamine, the ‘feel-good’ chemical that reinforces motivation. Celebration makes a huge difference.
Whether it’s completing a task, sticking to your schedule, or simply showing up, celebrate it! 50 years ago, training programs were more like boot camps. I said they ought to be fun, exciting and introduced gratitude, dance, laughter meditation and practices to make change more easily. The more fun you have the more apt you’ll stay with it. It’s the key to staying inspired and motivated. If you love it, you’ll stay with it.

One of my students, Lisa, struggled with staying motivated. She learned to reward herself with small treats for every milestone.
