January 5 was Robert Duvall’s birthday. Happy Birthday to Robert!
Robert and I meet at the counter of Schwab’s on Sunset. I’m in my
early to mid twenties. We enjoy breakfast and talk about projects we are both producing.
I’m trying to get a narrative off the ground and hit some snags. He wants to produce a narrative documentary on gypsies.I ask if he knows Steve Tsigonoff, the resident Schwab’s parking lot
gypsy who I enjoy coffee with from time to time.
Steve was marvelous at doing impersonations of famous actors. Really talented that way. And he lived hand to mouth.I go out to find Steve in parking lot. He worked on customer’s cars
while they dined.
I told him Robert Duvall would like to meet him. We walk in and I make the introduction. Robert gives Steve a lead role in his documentary. And for a few years helped out Steve monetarily after the fact. That documentary was called ‘Angelo My Love’.
I still saw Steve from time to time. He remained the same cool guy.
Robert got him another role in a movie he was in ‘The Stone Boy’. I
don’t know when Steve died.
We lost touch somewhere down the road. BUT he was a good guy, talented and had a brush with movie royalty and a couple of roles. I am delighted I could be a part in that for him.
Steve wanted to act. An opportunity opened up. I was able to make an introduction to someone who helped him experience his dream. Never give up on your dreams!
