“Have you ever tried to make a change, only to find yourself slipping back into old habits? Maybe things worked for a while, but before long, you were back where you started, even after promising yourself, “This time will be different.” If this sounds familiar, it might be time to take a closer look at your self-image. How you view yourself is important. What you think you can and can’t do governs you. Who you believe yourself to be matters. Attend to what you say.

We all make statements like: ‘That’s just not me.’ ‘ could never do that.’ ‘I can’t stop eating.’ I just have too much nervous energy.’ ‘I’m so stupid.’ ‘I never get anything right.’ ‘I am unlucky.’ ‘Things never work out for me.’ ‘I’m shy.’ I can’t talk in front of people.’ ‘I never have enough money.’ ‘I have a cold.’ Have you said anything like this? These are not positive affirmations, but they are still affirmations of your self-image.

Believe it or not, they are just as powerful as the positive ones we are encouraged to use for success. Perhaps, you are just realizing you are already using affirmations. Be careful then, what they are. The truth is, we’re all using affirmations, whether we realize it or not. The negative or limiting beliefs you repeat daily are working exactly the same way as positive affirmations, but they reinforce what you can’t do rather than what we can.

DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF

These thoughts and phrases keep you consistent with your self-image. Your self-image shapes what you believe is possible. If you constantly say, ‘I’m not good at this’ or ‘I’ll never succeed,’ you’re affirming and reinforcing those beliefs. Your self-image sets boundaries for what you believe you can and can’t do, It works very effectively to keep you inside those limits. Your self-image determines your results. If your self-image is limiting, your results will be, too.

We all have an internal image of ourselves that governs our actions, thoughts, and results. This self-image tells us who we are and what we deserve in life. If your self-image is limiting you won’t produce results that are inconsistent with who you think you are. If you see yourself as unsuccessful or unlucky, it’s unlikely you’ll take the actions necessary to achieve success. Your mind is constantly working to keep you in alignment with your self-image. That’s its job!

If you want to understand your self-image, start by paying attention to your thoughts and statements. Throughout the day, notice how you talk about yourself, especially when times are tough. This can give you clues about the internal boundaries you’ve set. Pay attention. Notice your ‘I’ statements. This can lead to some important breakthroughs. Awareness intitiates change. You notice what is holding you back so you can release it and move forward.

If you often say things like, ‘I’m just not good at this,’ or ‘I always mess things up,’ these are reflections of your self-image at work. You’re reinforcing the person you believe yourself to be. But guess what. There is good news. Great news in fact. You have the power to change your self-image. If you don’t think so, start affirming that you do and that you can, right now. Take charge instead of remaining a victim of negative affirmations. Change it now. You can.

For centuries, practitioners of self-improvement have known the key to happiness and success lies in transforming your self-image. People like Maxwell Maltz, a plastic surgeon turned self-image pioneer, made groundbreaking discoveries in this field. Maltz observed that even after physical changes, many patients remained unhappy. He realized that no matter how they looked on the outside, it was their internal self-image that ran the show.

It was their mental programming that was dictating their happiness. Just like a computer’s software controls its output, our self-image controls our results.
