“I offer this as the last in this recent series of articles on how to more effectively visualize to make your goals and dreams come true. These recent articles are from an upcoming book on manifesting what you want in your life.
Mastering Visualization: A Guide to Creating The Life You Desire
We often hear that to achieve our goals, we must first visualize them. But how exactly do we do this? What is the secret to making visualization work? What if your mental images aren’t clear? Can you still succeed? The answer is yes. Visualizing is a powerful tool that goes beyond just creating mental pictures; it involves engaging all your senses and, most importantly, tapping into the emotions that these images evoke.
Understanding Visualization: It’s More Than Just Seeing
For many, the emphasis on visualization has focused on the clarity of the images you create in our minds. While forming a clear internal representation of what you want to achieve is valuable, the process is far more nuanced. Visualization isn’t just about seeing an image. It’s about fully experiencing it through all your senses. Some people find it easy to create vivid mental images. Others, perhaps you, might struggle with this.
If you find visualizing difficult, you can have an easier time hearing sounds, voices, or even feeling the emotions associated with your goals. You can even combine these senses, creating a multi-sensory experience that includes sights, sounds, and feelings, and even tastes and smells. Think about movies you enjoy. They combine images, sounds and music to create emotions as you watch. You might feel thrilled, scared, joyful, tearful, tense and whew, relief. This is what you want to create inside yourself as you imagine your desires. Create the experience!
A musician might not vividly see themselves playing their instrument on stage, but they can clearly hear the music they would be playing and feel the exhilaration of the performance. Similarly, an athlete might not picture the race in detail but can feel the adrenaline, the tension in their muscles, and hear the crowd’s roar as they cross the finish line. Create the experience! Feel the emotions, the sensations as vividly as possible. Exaggerate the feelings. Feeling are what your brain notices most.
Develop A Rich Inner World: Practice Makes Perfect
While I used the phrase ‘practice makes perfect’ it’s more correct and applicable to understand ‘perfect practice makes permanent.’ That means repeat the process correctly, consistently for long enough and you develop the new positive, reliable habit. What do I mean by perfect? Wire into your neurology what you want. Stop wiring in what you don’t. It’s not about perfectionism. Drop that idea immediately. It doesn’t need to be THAT ‘correct!’
It simply means stop repeating what doesn’t work. Stop the old habits. Stop being sloppy. If you want to drive a golf ball seek to improve your mindset, stance and swing. Repeatedly, practice the correct behaviors to eliminate the ones that aren’t effective. ‘Success is the study progression toward a worthwhile goal.’ – Nightingale
If you’re not accustomed to deliberate visualization, it might seem challenging at first, but like any skill, it can be developed with practice. The key is to start small and build your abilities over time. The more you practice, the more vivid and detailed your internal experiences will become. Begin by practicing with everyday objects or environments. For instance, look around your room and focus on a specific corner.
Take note of the colors, textures, and shapes you see. Then, close your eyes and try to recreate that corner in your mind. If visualizing isn’t your strength, focus on the sounds or the feelings associated with that space instead. You can also practice by recreating familiar sounds or voices in your mind. Replay the sound of a loved one’s voice or a favorite song. Focus on the emotions these sounds evoke and let yourself fully experience them.
The same can be done with physical sensations. Run your hand across a piece of fabric, then close your eyes and try to recreate the sensation of the texture, the weight, and the temperature of the fabric in your mind. Feel what it feels like to walk and move. Where do you notice the weight, your shifting balance, the motion of your arms and legs. Perhaps you notice the temperature, a breeze or moisture while you walk. Recreate this inside.
Engage Your Imagination: A Playful Approach
One effective way to enhance your visualization skills is by engaging your imagination in playful and creative ways. For instance, imagine a simple object, like a red box. Visualize it in your mind and then change its color to blue. Now, change the shape from a box to a pyramid. Continue altering the object, making it spin, grow larger, shrink, or even fly across the room. Have fun. Play. Be curious. Explore. Experiment. There are no mistakes.
Enjoy the process. You can also create fun, exaggerated scenarios to stimulate your imagination. Picture a giraffe with a monkey on its back flying over your house, or a blue elephant balancing on a traffic light while eating an ice cream cone. These playful exercises can make the process of visualization enjoyable and help you become more comfortable with creating and manipulating mental images.
You can revisit cherished memories. Remember and return to a favorite vacation or a special moment with a loved one. Spend a few minutes each day reliving these memories, focusing on the sights, sounds, and feelings associated with them. Over time, these exercises will enrich your inner world, making it easier to visualize your goals with clarity and detail. The more you do the more you become capable of doing as you improve. Get it?
The Heart of Visualizing: Feeling the Emotions (intensely)
While creating vivid mental images is important, the real power of visualization lies in the emotions these images evoke. It’s not just about what you see or hear in your mind. It’s how these mental experiences make you feel. The emotions you attach to your visualizations are what give them their power. When you visualize your goals, it’s crucial to connect with the feelings of excitement, passion, and joy that come with achieving them.
For instance, if you’re visualizing a successful business, don’t just see yourself running the company. Feel the pride and satisfaction of your achievements, the thrill of solving challenges, and the joy of making a difference in your customers’ lives. Similarly, if you’re visualizing a personal milestone, such as running a marathon, immerse yourself in the emotions of the experience.
Feel the adrenaline pumping through your veins as you run, the determination in each step, and the overwhelming sense of accomplishment as you cross the finish line. The more vividly you can feel these emotions, the more powerful your visualization will be. These feelings are what drive the manifestation of your goals into reality. Positive emotions not only make your visualizing more impactful but influence your behavior, guiding you towards actions that align with your goals.
Overcoming Challenges in Visualization
If you find it difficult to visualize clearly, don’t be discouraged. Remember, it’s not the clarity of the image that matters most, but the emotions it evokes. Even if your mental picture is vague, focus on how it makes you feel. For example, if you’re visualizing a future career, you might not see every detail of your office or your daily routine. However, if you can feel the satisfaction of doing meaningful work, the pride of professional accomplishment, and the excitement of future opportunities, your visualization will still be effective.
As I frequently repeat to remind in my blog, books and workshops, you must ‘live from the feeling of the wish fulfilled’ as Neville so aptly urged us. Feel what it feels like to have already accomplished your goals. Bathe yourself in those feelings. One effective way to overcome challenges in visualization is to practice meditation or what some call mindfulness. These practices can help you develop greater control over your thoughts and emotions, making it easier to focus and create detailed mental images. Journaling your goals and the emotions you feel can help reinforce your visualizations, making them more vivid over time.
Real-World Applications of Visualization
Visualizing isn’t just a mental exercise; it has real-world applications that can lead to tangible results. Today we know many, if not most athletes use visualization techniques to improve their performance. A basketball player might visualize making free throws over and over again, feeling the ball leaving their hand and hearing the swish as it goes through the net. By mentally rehearsing these actions, they’re more likely to replicate them in real life.
In business, entrepreneurs often use visualization to strategize and plan for success. By mentally mapping out the steps needed to achieve their goals, they can anticipate challenges and devise solutions before they arise. A business owner might visualize the launch of a new product, imagining the marketing strategy, customer reactions, and eventual sales growth. This mental preparation helps lead to more confident and effective decision-making.
In your everyday life, visualizing this way can be a powerful tool for achieving personal goals. Whether you’re preparing for a job interview, planning a big event, or working towards a fitness goal, visualizing your success can help you stay motivated, focused, and ready to tackle any obstacles that come your way.
Visualizing is a Pathway to Success
Visualizing is more than just seeing pictures in your mind. It’s about engaging all your senses and, most importantly, connecting with the emotions that drive your desires. Whether you naturally and easily visualize or someone who finds it challenging, remember practice and persistence are key. By developing your ability to create more vivid mental experiences and by focusing on the positive emotions you feel when you imagine your goals, you can harness this power to create the life you desire.
Remember that it’s not about perfect images, but about the feelings you cultivate. The more you can immerse yourself in the joy, excitement, and passion of achieving your dreams, and what it feels like to have already made them happen, the more likely they are to become your reality. Visualization is a skill that anyone can develop, and with it, you can unlock your potential and create the future you want. Get it? Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
