“The serenity prayer is an exquisite example of how we can live and manage our lives. ‘God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. The courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.’ Reflect on this for a few moments.
There are things you can change and things you can’t. While that seems obvious, it often isn’t. That’s why the wisdom part is added. So often we attempt to control or change others; our children, parents, partners, siblings, friends, associates, even strangers.
We’re likely to be frustrated much of the time attempting to control others. You want to feel in control of your own life, don’t you? Others do too. When we attempt to bend them to our way it’s only natural they’d resist. I mean, wouldn’t you? Most of us would.
Stop Trying To Change Others – You Can Only Change Yourself
Stop trying to dominate others. That’s what it amounts to. You, or I, attempting to assert our will over someone else. It may be for a good reason. They’re wrong, or sick, or addicted, or causing trouble, or they don’t know what to do. So, we try to make them different.
We try to make them better. Let go of attempting to manipulate them to do what’s ‘right’. Realize we can’t change them. They must change themselves when they’re ready. Then, we feel better, are freer, and stop spinning our wheels, expending our energy.
Love them. Instead of trying to change them, accept them. Pray, hope, expect they’ll change when they’re ready. Obviously, if someone is in imminent danger of harming oneself, or others, take appropriate action. Otherwise, learn to let go. Seek wisdom.
When You Transform Yourself – The World Transforms Too
Allow them to be who they are. Allow them to live the life they want. Be there for them when they reach out. Wisdom means knowing we can’t change the person any more than we can change the weather, or the night into day. We accept it. We allow it. We use wisdom.
We can change is ourselves! Self-change takes courage. Change our knee jerk reactions to responses of love, kindness, understanding, and compassion. Take care of our needs. Assist the other without trying to force them to be different. Seek serenity. Be wise.
Act from love, not from need or desperation. Take care of your own house. Stop throwing bricks at the glass. Get it? Everyone has to make their own decisions. Recognize whose problem a problem is. Recognize what you can control and what you can’t. Seek peace.
You Can’t Control Others But You Can Change Your Reactions
Reflect on the serenity prayer. Use it to guide you. Become a better person for yourself, and others. Take the prayer to heart. Seek courage, serenity and wisdom. Seek love and light. Seek courage to transform yourself and do it. Seek serenity to accept. Be giving.
Give, not to get a return. Stop plying others. Stop begging, whining, pleading or nagging. If, and when, the person reaches out to you, then, be there for the person. Don’t burn a bridge with someone you care for. Put your energy only into what you can change.
Change yourself. Transform yourself! Manage your mindset, your feelings and energy, your speech and behaviors. Manage your own life. Learn to let go, and let god. Develop faith or trust. Seek a source, or higher power. Release! You can’t control the drivers on the roads.
Seek Courage – Seek Serenity – Seek Wisdom – Let Go – Let God
Stop trying! You can’t change the flow of traffic. Learn what you can and can’t do. Accept it. Everything is a lesson when you understand that everything is a lesson! Everything is a blessing in the very same way. You’ll enjoy more of what life offers when you let go of needing to control or change others and find the blessing of accepting them as they are. Find the blessing in all. Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
