
“Negatives don’t register the way we think they do. Your brain doesn’t process ‘don’t.’ It sees and feels the image of the thing you’re trying to avoid. The moment you tell a child, ‘Don’t spill,’ what happens? In order to understand what you mean, the child has to recall what spilling is. And right there, that image, spilling juice, water flying, the mess is front and center in their mind. A few moments later the glass tips. It’s spilt.
And, without missing a beat, you find yourself saying, ‘I TOLD you NOT to spill!’ BUT YOU DIDN’T. You instructed the child to spill. Eventually, we learn to somewhat override this but it is still operational. To understand ‘don’t spill’ you must still imagine spilling. Keep what I said in mind, Negatives DO NOT register the way we think they do. If you say, ‘Don’t think of failure,’ guess what shows up? YUP! — failure. It’s wired in.
This is why so often, what you resist just digs in deeper. You can’t push it away. You can’t fight it off. You can’t win by opposition. What you resist, persists. Quick story. Doing a workshop we were cleaning up and a friend of mine told my then girlfriend, ‘don’t forget your watch’ which was next to the sink. We finished up. Got to the hotel and you guessed it. She forgot it by the sink. We had to go back to retrieve it.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
SO you can’t stop or prevent it But you CAN shift. You CAN direct. You CAN replace the old pattern by bringing in something new. Something better. Something that moves you forward instead of keeping you stuck. So, if you catch yourself saying ‘Don’t forget your…’ ADD ‘Remember to take it.’ Instead of just saying, ‘don’t be late.’ You add ‘please get there on time.’ Get it? Much of my work is redirecting how people are thinking.
You want to shift from problems to successes. When persistent thoughts try to rule you, thoughts of fear, doubt, or anything unwanted, you may have to redirect your focus over and over. That’s okay. That’s how it works. You’re learning. You’re building the muscle. If you practice this, gently and consistently you’ll gain control. You begin to steer. Like driving down the center of a lane, you’re constantly making micro-adjustments.
A little to the left. A little to the right. These small shifts keep you moving straight. Trying to not think something is a losing battle. But choosing to focus on something else is the way through. And when you start doing it regularly and on purpose, you’ll begin to feel how powerful and free you really are. This is what I guide people through every day.
