“Some people believe that to make lasting, positive change, they must overhaul everything in their lives all at once. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The reality is that while change is necessary, it doesn’t have to be drastic. A complete transformation isn’t required; instead, small, consistent changes can lead to profound results over time. You’ve probably heard me say, “Drop by drop fills the tub.” I repeat things a lot on purpose!
Or perhaps you know the saying, “How do you eat an elephant? Bite by bite.” Those highlight a simple truth: big journeys begin with small steps. Think about the famous proverb, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” The key is to make small, manageable adjustments that compound over time. Consider NASA launching a rocket to the moon. As it travels, the internal guidance system makes constant, tiny corrections.
It adjusts to keep it on course. If the rocket deviates by just 1/10th of 1% shortly after takeoff, it could be hundreds of thousands, even millions of miles off course by the time it reaches space. If you’re driving across a flat desert and make the slightest turn of the wheel, locking it in place, you’ll eventually end up miles away from your original path. Tiny adjustments lead to big deviations over time, whether positive or negative.

This applies directly to personal development. If you aim to improve your life and make even a small change, you can achieve significant improvements over time. That tiny adjustment, when maintained, can shift the entire trajectory of your life. Since the early 80’s I’ve been an advocate for adding novelty to your daily routine. That means adding in things you don’t normally do. When you add novelty, you spice things up. It is awesome.
Your brain loves it, and you will begin to notice new and different things, opportunities, possibilities and resources. You might be thinking, “I don’t have the time, energy, or money to make major changes right now!” That’s okay. That journey of 1000 miles I changed a bit. The first step on that journey happens in your mind deciding to go on the journey. The second step is the one you take on the earth. Decide to do it. Then do it.
Decide to do something to help yourself. You don’t need to turn your life upside down. Start small. Maybe you commit to reading just one page of inspirational material every morning when you wake up. One single page. It’s not overwhelming, but it’s a step in the right direction. If you can’t do that read a paragraph. Read a single sentence. And if you feel inclined, you can always read more. Little bit by little bit increase as you are able.

Or you decide to listen to motivational audio while commuting. Driving is a perfect time to fill your mind with inspiring messages, or even to recite your own affirmations with enthusiasm. You can use that time to supercharge your mindset, transforming an otherwise ordinary activity into something powerful. You could spend five minutes visualizing your goals first thing in the morning. Picture yourself living the life you desire.
Imagine having already achieved the changes you want. This simple exercise can work wonders in focusing your mind on your desired future. Or spend five minutes laughing when you wake up. Just laugh for five minutes straight. You’ll be amazed at how good you’ll feel, and how it sets a positive tone for the day ahead. You might decide to smile more throughout the day or commit to doing things that bring a smile to someone else’s face.
Small acts of kindness or even a friendly smile can ripple out and create a positive environment for yourself and those around you. Another option to spice up your daily routine is by trying something new. Eat with your non-dominant hand, take a different route to work, or sleep at the foot of your bed. These tiny changes keep life fresh and stimulate creativity. You can keep a journal of everything you’re grateful for. Appreciation, appreciates. Get it?

Each time you write something down, take a moment to truly feel grateful. If you’re looking to work on relationships, decide to truly listen to the people around you. Focus on understanding them deeply. Or spend time monitoring your self-talk. Catch negative thoughts and replace them with uplifting ones. Consider meditating for five minutes or more a day or resolve to stop complaining. This quiet time can do you so much good. Try it.
Choose to only speak words that bless, edify, heal, uplift, prosper and transform yourself and others, accentuating the positive. Focus on blessing, healing, and prosperity, both for yourself and those around you. Remember, you don’t have to take on all these ideas at once. You could if you wanted, but don’t overwhelm yourself. Start with just one small change, something manageable that you can commit to for at least 30 days.
You’ll be amazed at the difference such a small adjustment can make. Then continue. Keep going. Do 60, 90 and you’ll discover you’ve developed some wonderful positive habits that while small provided big positive changes. As you progress, you may find yourself naturally adding more positive habits into your life. Choose what makes you feel joyful and empowered. But remember, if you do nothing, nothing changes. Take that first step, no matter how small, and fill your day with actions that bring you delight. Celebrate everything! – Rex Sikes

Your subconscious doesn’t judge; it simply gives you more of what you focus on. If your focus is negative, that’s what you’ll get. Understand this.

If it’s positive and aligned with your goals, you’ll get that instead. The key is intention. You must consciously choose to focus on positive outcomes, amplifying your good feelings and intentions in the process. This is why I began this discussion with the kind of less-than-glorious self-talk most of us utter. Those statements tip us off to what the image is that we have of ourselves. That’s why you want to notice and change them. It applies to your inner images too.
The more you focus on feeling good about yourself and your future, the more your subconscious works to make that vision your reality.
