“Stupid is as stupid does. If you want to convince stupid you must first go to stupid’s level. Discover what’s important to stupid and communicate your message in a manner stupid can understand and appreciate. You must first meet stupid where stupid is.
Then gently lead. You won’t convince stupid of the error of their thinking if you think they’re stupid. That IS stupid to too. You must rise above and become curious how it is this person thinks, believes, speaks and acts as they do. Don’t judge. Actually, be curious.
If you adhere to your position, without aligning with them, and without first validating them make your tasks much harder. They aren’t likely to appreciate your point of view if you don’t first appreciate theirs. Even if you disagree with it. Get this.

You succeed easier when you can walk with them arm in arm. Then similar to a friend, or a trusted tour guide, you may be better able to point out, and show them, the sights they otherwise miss or dismiss. First, create rapport, respect, understanding and acceptance.
When they feel validated and accepted they’re more likely to return it to you. Understanding comes when it is what you first seek. You don’t get understanding and agreement when you first go to convince someone to your point. It takes some time and patience.
Knowing why and how something is important to another person is necessary. Find out what’s important to them. Find out why they think that way. Validate them. You can validate them without validating the point of view you think needs adjusting. Acceptance!

Keep in mind it’s more about learning about them and their point of view than trying to change it. In listening carefully with an open mind you may learn the very ideas they may be open to, that they haven’t entertained yet. Be gentle. Be accepting. Be open.
Be kind and loving. Be considerate. Show them it’s okay to be flexible by demonstrating you are. Go higher. If they don’t change their mind, no worries. Perhaps, you planted a seed. Later, you can nurture it and perhaps reap. Get it? Allow them to be who they are before trying to change their mind. Respect them. Lead by example. Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
