“Are you dissatisfied with the results you’ve been getting? Do you feel stuck, like you’re ready to advance but somehow not moving forward fast enough? Maybe things are “okay,” but deep down you know they could be better. The good news is, there is something you can do about it. The answer lies in Intentional Thinking, a powerful mental shift that helps you regain control of your thoughts, your mindset, and ultimately, your results.
Positive thinking is often misunderstood. Many people dismiss it as “wishful thinking” or “unrealistic dreaming.” They picture someone sitting back, hoping everything will work out without any effort. I prefer to use the term Intentional Thinking. It’s more than just “thinking positive.” It’s about deliberately choosing your thoughts, being the active creator of your mindset, rather than the passive receiver of whatever pops into your head.
Intentional Thinking means you consciously choose the thoughts that occupy your mind. You’re in charge. You’re the decision-maker. This practice allows you to select thoughts that serve your goals, empower your actions, and lead you toward the life you want to create. Ask yourself: Are your thoughts leading you where you want to go? Are they making you feel like a winner, or do they make you feel stuck?

If you’re not satisfied with your progress or your life, it’s time to shift your thinking. You are not your thoughts. You think thoughts, they come and go from all kinds of places, often influenced by outside factors like media, authority figures, or societal expectations. Many of the thoughts you think aren’t even truly your own, they’re inherited patterns from others.
If you’re not intentional about your thinking, these automatic, habitual thoughts will run the show. And guess what? They often lead to feelings of doubt, fear, negativity, or failure. Here’s some examples of common thought patterns that hold you back. ‘I’m not good enough.’ ‘What if I fail?’ ‘Nothing ever works out for me. These kinds of thoughts don’t just happen by accident; they stem from years of conditioning. But there is good news.
You can break that conditioning. Your thoughts have power. The way you think directly affects how you feel, what actions you take, and the outcomes you experience in life. Negative thoughts lead to self-doubt, fear, and hesitation. Positive, intentional thoughts lead to motivation, confidence, and progress. Think about it like this: In football, the ball is either moving toward the goal line or it isn’t. Your thoughts work the same way.

They either move you forward toward your goals, keep you stuck in place, or worse, push you backward. Imagine waking up and immediately thinking, ‘Today’s going to be tough. I’ll probably mess up at work.’ This mindset drains your energy, clouds your judgment, and influences you to act out of fear or frustration. Now imagine waking up and intentionally choosing to think, /Today, I’m going to handle challenges with confidence.’
‘In fact, I’m going to grow from them.’ This simple shift in thinking sets a tone of confidence and resilience that will likely guide your actions throughout the day. What to do? Become Aware of Your Thoughts: The first step to intentional thinking is becoming conscious of the thoughts running through your mind. Pay attention to what you’re thinking throughout the day, especially in challenging situations. Do your thoughts support you?
Or do they undermine your efforts? Here’s an exercise for you. Set a timer on your phone to go off every hour. When it does, take a moment to reflect on your thoughts. Are they positive or negative? Are they moving you closer to your goals or holding you back? Challenge Negative Thoughts: When you notice a negative or unhelpful thought, don’t just accept it. Challenge it. Ask yourself, ‘Is this really true?’

Often, these negative thoughts are exaggerated and aren’t grounded in reality. Next, reframe the thought. Negative Thought: ‘I’ll never be good enough for this job.’ You choose empowering thoughts. Once you’ve identified and challenged your negative thoughts, replace them with more empowering, productive ones. Choose thoughts that align with the person you want to become and the goals you want to achieve.
Write down three thoughts that inspire and empower you every morning. Carry these thoughts with you throughout the day. Examples: ‘I am capable of achieving my goals.’ ‘I welcome challenges as opportunities to grow.’ ‘I am in control of my success.’ Imagine yourself successful. Visualize Success: Visualization is a powerful tool for reinforcing intentional thinking.
Spend a few minutes each day imagining yourself successfully achieving your goals. Picture it vividly. What does it feel like, look like, and sound like when you’ve reached your destination? Okay. Now, close your eyes and imagine achieving a specific goal. Feel the excitement, pride, and satisfaction. Let that positive energy guide your thoughts and actions for the day. Take charge of your thinking. You are not a victim of your thoughts.

You are the creator of them. YOU are the thinker, not the thoughts! Don’t let old patterns or negative influences run your life. You have the power to choose thoughts that align with your dreams and goals. Ask yourself, what thoughts are driving my life today?’ ‘Are they helping me or hurting me?’ If you’re not happy with the answers, it’s time to make a change. Choose your thoughts. Decide to fill your mind with better thoughts.
Choose thoughts that bless, edify, heal, inspire, motivate, transform, uplift and move you closer to the person you want to become. Set your intention daily. Each morning, decide what kind of thoughts you will allow to guide you. Practice regularly. Like any skill, intentional thinking takes practice. The more you do it, the easier it becomes. Stay persistent. When old, negative thoughts creep in, gently remind yourself to choose better ones.
Be patient. It’s a process, but the results are worth it. Your thoughts shape your life. Intentional thinking is about taking back control. It’s about no longer allowing your mind to be dictated by past patterns, external pressures, or automatic responses. It’s about choosing the thoughts that serve you, motivate you, and inspire you to become the best version of yourself. The choice is yours.
