“Seriously, have fun. This is about letting go, right? So let’s not take ourselves too seriously in the process. When you practice, start small and ease into it. Be light about it. Be gentle. Don’t try to become the Dalai Lama overnight. That’s not how it works. You don’t go from zero to Jesus levels of grace in one day. Take baby steps. Take playful steps. Begin with something that’s mildly irritating.

Pick mild examples to begin with like the guy who cut you off in traffic or your coworker who keeps stealing your stapler. Instead of gripping the steering wheel with white knuckles, yell out, ‘Hey! You must be in a real hurry. Good luck out there!’ and mean it. Let that little jab turn into a grin.

You’re not doing it for their sake, remember, you’re doing it for your own peace of mind. Or imagine the coworker. Instead of stewing over the missing stapler and plotting revenge via office supply sabotage, maybe you imagine they’re preparing for a high-stakes paper-clipping championship. Laugh a little. Let it go. Get a new stapler. Label it with glitter and unicorn stickers if it helps. Move on, and yes, have fun.

Make a game out of it. How fast can you bounce back from a slight? How quickly can you shift your emotional state when something goes wrong? You can pretend you’re training for the emotional Olympics. The goal: grace under pressure. When you turn this into a playfulness challenge, it becomes easier and more natural. It’s like learning to ride a bike. You don’t start on a mountain trail; you start with training wheels in your driveway.

The more you practice, the more balance you develop, and before you know it, you’re cruising. AND sometimes, let’s face it. Sometimes you screw up. We all have those days when we weren’t our best selves. Maybe you snapped at someone who didn’t deserve it. Maybe you ghosted a friend out of avoidance. Maybe you really fumbled the ball, and you’ve been replaying it in your head like a blooper reel ever since.

Here’s the deal: That’s okay. That’s normal. That’s human. And just like we ought to forgive others, we need to forgive ourselves. So, go ahead and picture that less-than-glorious moment. Don’t run from it, look it straight in the eye. Now imagine inserting a better version of you into that scene. A you who had all the clarity, calm, and patience in the world. Let that version of you handle it. Rewrite it, re-code it, and then feel what that’s like.

Feel what it feels like to get it right. You’re not changing the past; you’re building resources for the present and the future. This is why I encourage you to build a ‘library of resourcefulness.’ Think of it like creating your own personal highlight reel. Collect memories where you felt empowered, loved, confident, strong, wise, funny—whatever traits you want more of. Replay those. Soak in the feeling.

Let those moments become touchstones you can draw upon any time. Everything becomes easier when you’re operating from a full tank of good vibes. Say you once gave a killer speech in high school, and the crowd loved it. That moment of being on stage, owning the room, that’s a feeling you can bottle up and revisit. Or maybe you once comforted a friend during a rough time, and your compassion made a difference.

That, too, becomes part of your internal toolkit. The more you revisit those moments, the more they rewire your identity into someone who IS compassionate, confident, calm, whatever you want to be. When you choose to live from a place of lightness and fun, everything becomes easier. Your heart opens. Your brain relaxes. Your body stops bracing for impact. You become open, and open people are happier people.

Think about the children you’ve seen giggling uncontrollably over something silly. That’s what lightness looks like. They haven’t yet learned to carry grudges or weigh themselves down with “never forgets.” We can return to that state. We can choose play over punishment. What you plant grows. If you water resentment, you’ll grow bitter. If you nurture forgiveness and fun, you’ll grow peace.

Your internal world becomes a reflection of what you regularly feed it. So why not feed it joy? Make lightness your default setting. Forgive like it’s going out of style. Laugh when you can, and if you can’t laugh yet, smile. Even that helps. You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t even have to be good at this yet. You just must begin, and have fun along the way.
