“The novice learns the basics. The beginner begins at the beginning. We all start somewhere. The new learner may not understand the value of the basics. It depends what they are exposed to, who they listen to and whether or not they are ready.
When they are ready then the learning can occur. Remember you can’t push a rope. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. It is what it is. Too many want to learn the advanced things before mastering the basics. This is a huge mistake in thinking.
True masters in any art or discipline first and foremost master the basics. That is what makes them masters. Check out any champion or pro golfer, athlete, martial artists, boxer, dancer. They use and continue to use the basics they have mastered all the time.
Skill Comes Of Doing – Repetition Is The Mother Of Skill – Repeat
The novice, and sometimes even the more advanced student needs reminding of this, at times. They need correction and inspiration. They need feedback and encouragement. Then more correction and more of the same. Then more reminding. Rinse and repeat.
Mastery is a process. It is not a linear progression. There are breakthroughs and backslides. There are hills and plateaus. Learning happens through steady conditioning and in leaps and bounds. Through it all the student should continue to master the basics.
Master the basic mindset, moves, and principles. In earlier times there were apprentices who studied with the master, who decided when it was time to test and move on. They instilled in the apprentice the need for mastery of the basics. A great appreciation.
Correct Repetition – Consistently – For Long Enough Builds Habit
The Blackbelt now begins to practice what they had been learning in all the other belts or degrees. They have learned to blend the basics together. As the saying goes, ‘I don’t fear the 10,000 strikes you practiced once. I fear the one strike you practiced 10,000 times.’
The novice actually has great opportunity available. They are new. The key is to stay new and stay fresh. Stay open and enjoy the mastery process. Sometimes the more advanced can become jaded, cynical or even egotistic. Stop. Keep it simple. Keep it fresh. Stick with the basics. Master the basics wherever you are. Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
