“I want to share with you a principle that has the power to radically transform your life: spending 80% of your time thinking and feeling good. It’s simple math. The more time you dedicate to focusing on what’s right, what’s working, and what feels good, the more your life aligns with positivity, joy, and success. The law of attraction, neuroscience, and plain old common sense all back this up.

Your brain is a pattern recognition machine. It constantly seeks evidence to support the thoughts and beliefs you focus on most. Spend 80% of your time feeling good, and your brain rewires itself to notice opportunities, create solutions, and amplify your happiness. Research in neuroscience shows that positive emotions activate the brain’s reward circuitry, releasing dopamine and serotonin.

These chemicals not only make us feel good but improve our focus, motivation, and problem-solving abilities. Dr. Barbara Fredrickson’s “broaden-and-build” theory of positive emotions demonstrates that the more we cultivate positivity, the more our capacity to thrive and adapt expands. Consider this: if you spend most of your time 80% focused on what uplifts you, you’re programming your brain to keep that momentum going.

As I’ve repeated for decades, the more you do the more you can do. You become more capable as a result. So, what about that other 20%? It’s great news. You don’t have to be perfect. I’m not saying you’ll never encounter challenges or negative feelings. Life is life. That’s the 20%. Some people spend time sorting through old wounds, addressing setbacks, or navigating difficulties. Okay. You don’t have to, but it’s part of life.

The key is not to let the 20% take over. Many people give equal weight, or worse, more weight, to their hardships, struggles and even past wounds than to their successes and what they could enjoy now. You don’t move forward when you’re stuck at 50/50. That’s neutral. That’s spinning your wheels. That’s one foot on the dock and the other on the boat. To accelerate change, you need to tip the scales. Be predominantly positive.

80% positivity, focus, and gratitude for what’s working. That’s just to say the predominance of your time and thoughts should be on the positive. It could be 80% or more. Some people swear by therapy or revisiting past pain to find resolution. That’s their path, and it’s valid if it works for them. But neuroscience points out that dwelling on shortcomings, negativity, or what’s broken keeps you locked into those states. It works both ways.

Think of it like driving a car. If you constantly stare in the rearview mirror, you’re bound to crash. Instead, glance back when needed but keep your eyes on the road ahead. Does this mean you ignore your problems? I’ve said this so many times. Acknowledge them. Learn from them. But don’t give them more time than they deserve. Too frequently looking for the solution to your problem IS part of the problem. It’s about your focus.

If you have weeds in your garden, it means you weed them. Stay positive. You don’t worry or fret and fume. You do what needs to be done. If you can’t do it you pay someone or find someone who’ll do it for you in barter or as a good deed. Worrying, thinking negatively, feeling bad, hating the weeds, wondering why me, why do I have weeds in my garden doesn’t resolve the issue or make you feel any better. Get it? I hope so.

Instead, make the good stuff the major part of your life. Spend most of your time there. If you want to go somewhere nice, put both feet in the boat and go. Here’s what you can do. Start each day by listing 5-10 things you’re grateful for. They can be as small as the coffee in your cup or as big as the love in your life. Research from the Greater Good Science Center shows that regular gratitude practice increases happiness and resilience.

Normally, I encourage 25 or more both morning and before bed. Don’t just list them. Consider them. Feel appreciation for them. Take 5-10 minutes a day to vividly imagine yourself living your ideal life. Picture the details: where you are, who you’re with, how it feels. This isn’t just wishful thinking. It’s a mental rehearsal that trains your brain to recognize and seize opportunities. Visualize your success now and what you want later.

Celebrate the Now: Right now, this moment is a gift. Appreciate it. Celebrate how far you’ve come, even if you’re not where you want to be yet. Everything you’ve experienced has led you here. Anticipate the Future:
Have faith that good things are coming. Even if you can’t see them yet, trust that they’re on the way. This belief helps you stay open to possibilities and keeps you moving forward. Practice the ways to keep moving forward.
