“This research confirms that imagination is a neurological reality that can impact our brains and bodies in ways that matter for our wellbeing,” said Dr.Tor Wager, director of the Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Laboratory at CU Boulder and co-senior author of the paper, published in the journal Neuron. We can learn new things, improve performance and resolve difficulties.
One method is called ‘systematic desensitization,’ a form of exposure therapy. The goal is to reduce the symptoms of stress, avoidance, fear, and anxiety a person experiences in the presence of the source of their discomfort by gently and gradually exposing that person to that source. It’s done in steps and uses relaxation approaches to help relieve symptoms the person has experienced.
If you were a participant in the process, you would be asked to imagine the source of your discomfort. It might be a spider, heights, a bird or a dog, or any other perceived threat that is common to people. The brain doesn’t know the difference between an imagined image or an outer one. Your brain and body respond similarly to how they would if you experienced the actual source.
Through this process, one imagines it repeatedly in a relaxed manner and a safe environment and soon the discomfort to the phobia subsides. The brain is trained to respond differently. A study by University of Colorado Boulder and Icahn School of Medicine researchers utilizing brain imaging suggests imagination is a powerful tool to overcome fear and anxiety-related disorders.
THINK ABOUT THAT! The practice has been around for a long, long time. Ancients even knew to do this. Repetition can work against you or for you. Your imagination can work against you or for you. People have long known that you can face your fears and overcome them by forcing yourself to face them. To do what you fear. Because we know this: the more we do, the more we become capable of doing.
Get this. When you correctly repeat a thought, feeling or behavior, frequently and consistently for a long enough period you can master any skill and remove any limitation. Imagine doing this for yourself. Expose yourself to the fear and you can overcome it. Expose yourself to the possibility and you can make it a reality. You can take charge of your mind and emotions and live as you want.
Since the 50s therapists and coaches have used this form of exposure therapy as treatment by asking patients to face their fears whether the fears are real or imagined. Recent research continues to support what we’ve known for eons. However now, anecdotal evidence has scientific support. It’s discovering more how imagination impacts the brain compared to exposure to the source in life.

Lead author of the study Marianne C. Reddan says, “These novel findings bridge a long-standing gap between clinical practice and cognitive neuroscience. This is the first neuroscience study to show that imagining a threat can actually alter the way it is represented in the brain.” Get it! Imagining a threat can ALTER the way it is represented in the brain. You know what this means?
