“Think of this as building muscle: every time you direct your thoughts positively, you’re strengthening this new way of thinking. Start with self-talk, affirmations, and visualizing your goals. Replace critical self-talk with powerful, positive, optimistic statements, and ask questions like ‘What’s the next best step I can take?’ or ‘What can I learn from this experience?’ which are a part of the process of asking Directed Questions™.
There’s more to it than just asking questions. Directed Questions™ is a process I developed in the late 70’s to guide your mind toward what you want rather than what you fear. You’ve a choice how and where you want to direct your attention, your focus, your mind and it matters what you choose. What you choose gives you different outcomes. So, stop complaining and start directing your mind. Realize this, you can’t not choose.
Consciously or not, you are always choosing. Even not choosing is a choice. Therefore, think of your mind as a muscle. Just as you would train your body to grow stronger, you must train your thoughts to be positive and solution focused. Every time you choose to redirect a negative thought, you’re building mental strength. The more you practice, the more natural it becomes. How do you start? By paying attention to your self-talk.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
Replace unwanted less-than-glorious or negative statements and images using affirmations and visualizing your goals. If you catch yourself spiraling into doubt or frustration, replace that inner voice with positive statements. Instead of thinking, ‘Why does this always happen to me?’ ask questions like: ‘What’s the next best step I can take?’ ‘What lesson is hidden in this experience?’ These are component questions of Directed Questions™.
Directed Questions™ is a simple but powerful technique to guide your thoughts away from fear and frustration and toward solutions and success. The process is designed to help you take control of your life. Sarah, a marketing professional, was drowning in deadlines. Her inner dialogue was filled with complaints like, ‘I’ll never get this done.’ One day, she decided to try something new. Just as you can too.
Whenever negative thoughts popped up, she replaced them with affirmations like, ‘I’m capable of handling challenges with ease.’ She directed her mind by asking, ‘What’s one thing I can accomplish right now to make progress?’ These shifts helped her tackle her workload one step at a time. Before long, she was meeting deadlines with confidence and calm. She went from overwhelmed to productive by making a choice.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
John was devastated when his startup didn’t take off. He found himself stuck in a loop of ‘What if I’m just not cut out for this?’ Recognizing the negativity, John shifted into a positive mindset by asking, ‘What can I learn from this experience to improve my next venture?’ By focusing on the lessons and embracing a mindset of growth, John eventually launched a second business that thrived, fueled by his newfound resilience.
John found opportunity in what he first viewed as setbacks. Emma struggled with self-doubt when considering a career change. Her inner critic kept saying, ‘You’re too old to start over.’ But Emma began visualizing her ideal role and affirming, ‘Every step I take leads me closer to my dream.’ She broke the process into manageable steps, asking, ‘What’s one action I can take today to move forward?’
That small mental shift allowed her to build momentum and transition to a fulfilling new career. She shifted from self-doubt to self-belief. You can too and you can learn how to start directing your mind today. Here are some actionable steps you can use to redirect your mind and build a habit of positive thinking: Practice Gratitude: Start each morning by listing three things you’re grateful for.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
This primes your mind to focus on abundance. I encourage you to do at least 25 but if nothing else, begin with 3. Use Affirmations: Replace limiting beliefs with positive assertions or statements like, ‘I am capable,’ or ‘I create opportunities.’ Visualize your success: Spend a few minutes each day picturing your goals as already achieved. Feel the excitement and joy as though it’s real now. Live from the feeling of the wish fulfilled.
Ask Questions: Reframe your thinking with questions that guide your focus. Instead of ‘Why can’t I do this?’ ask, ‘What’s one thing I can do right now to succeed?’ Also, learn the Directed Question™ process as it’s more than just asking a question. Master your mind to transform your life. Your thoughts shape your reality. When you stop complaining and start directing your mind, you unleash the power to create the life you desire.
Complaints keep you stuck, but focusing on solutions propels you forward. If my coaching clients, Sarah, John, and Emma can turn their lives around by redirecting their thoughts, imagine what’s possible for you.Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure about your next step, the key lies in mastering your mindset. Take the first step toward your best life. Are you ready to stop complaining and start creating?
