This internal image operates just like a computer. whatever is programmed within consistently gets output. Maltz began exploring what people were doing in their imagination and how they could leverage it differently to achieve their desired outcomes. As both a doctor and businessman, his goal was satisfied, happy patients, but he realized that no matter how much their physical appearance improved, many remained unhappy.
UNLESS they changed their inner self-image. His work, especially his breakthrough book Psycho-Cybernetics, has been a steady bestseller since 1960. It remains as relevant today as ever. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it. Read it over and over! Maltz’s core idea is simple yet profound: our behaviors stem from our self-image, the mental picture we hold of ourselves.

Maltz’s patients, for instance, sought happiness through changes in their appearance, but that rarely worked. Why? Because their self-image, their internal view of themselves, remained the same. True, lasting change only happens when you work on the inner person first.
Maltz realized that most people struggle with change because they try to fix the behaviors first. But that’s putting the cart before the horse. Imagine a ladder where self-image is at the top rung, and behaviors are further down. You can’t change the lower rungs without addressing the top. There’s an order to positive change. There’s a recipe for success. To truly change behaviors, Maltz argued, you must first change your internal self-image.
When you shift how you see yourself, your actions and habits follow. This is because changing your self-image is a higher-level shift. Image governs everything else. Just as thoughts precede actions, changes in your mental image led to changes in your behavior.
