“Anyone can talk a good talk. It’s easy to stand up and preach about integrity, truth, honesty, peace, and love. Words are cheap! Words are just noise unless they’re backed up by action. The real question is, does the person walk their talk, or are they just spewing empty promises? Are their words congruent with their actions? Do they live by the principles they readily advocate, or are they putting on a show? Which is it?
It’s not hard to spot a fraud if you’re paying attention. A true leader doesn’t just talk about integrity. They live it. They don’t just speak about transparency. They embody it in everything they do. They don’t just preach goodness. They practice it, day in and day out. But frequently, we’re deceived by the wolves in sheep’s clothing, those who wrap themselves in the language of virtue while their actions betray them as anything but virtuous.
How can you tell when someone is worth following? How can you discern the real leaders from the pretenders? Look at their lives, not just their words. Examine their actions. Are they consistent? Are they congruent? Do they lead with humility and a genuine concern for others, or are they more interested in their own image, their own power, their own gain? True examples, live their examples. They don’t preach love while practicing hate!
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
Let’s look at some examples of true leadership. Think about Mother Teresa, a woman who didn’t just talk about serving the poor, she devoted her entire life to it. She walked the streets of Calcutta, tending to the sick, the dying, the forgotten. She didn’t seek fame or fortune; she sought to alleviate suffering. Her actions spoke louder than any words could. She was powerful because of her service and was called to enter the office of kings.
Consider Martin Luther King Jr., a man who didn’t just talk about justice and equality, he risked his life for it. He marched, he protested, he stood in the face of hatred and violence with unwavering courage and a deep commitment to nonviolence. He didn’t just speak about love. He lived it, even when it cost him everything. He sought to help people be better, have opportunity and get along. He had a dream and worked to fulfill it.
Think of Gandhi. He didn’t just talk about peace. He embodied it. He led a movement that changed the course of history through peaceful resistance. He didn’t just speak about freedom, he starved himself for it. He was imprisoned and suffered for it. His life was his message, and it was a message of profound power. He brought an empire to its knees without hate or violence. He sought to uplift and edify but didn’t tear down and divide.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
Abraham Lincoln didn’t just talk about unity. He fought to preserve it. He didn’t just speak about freedom. He signed the Emancipation Proclamation, knowing it would plunge the nation deeper into war, but also knowing it was the right thing to do. He led with a quiet strength and an unwavering moral compass, even when the path was dark and uncertain. He stood against injustice, hate and harm. He offered hope and help. He died for it.
What do these leaders have in common? They didn’t just talk about the greater good, they lived it. They had integrity, transparency, and a deep concern for those who had less. Less freedom, less influence, less money, and less power to change their circumstances. These leaders didn’t just offer lip service; they put everything on the line for what they believed in. They walked their talk, and that’s why we remember them today. They lived it.
We need leaders like them! We need leaders who are willing to stand up and live by the principles they profess, who aren’t afraid to take the hard road, who put others before themselves. We need leaders who are more interested in making a difference than in making a name for themselves. We’ve had enough bragging and boasting and hating and hurting. We’ve had enough of the madness and the division and the posturing.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
Next time someone claims to be a leader, ask yourself: Are they walking their talk? Are they living their values, or are they just using them as a tool to manipulate and control? Are they leading by example, or are they hiding behind empty words? Would you want your kids to follow that person’s example and behave that way with you and with others in their life? If not, you might want to choose another role model. This is an important question!
Real leaders don’t shout about their integrity. They don’t talk about it or profess to have it. They show it through their actions. They live it. They don’t just talk about making the world a better place. They actually do the work. They bring people together to solve problems that face us. They don’t divide and set people at odds with each other. We need people to work together. We need the people to have the power. We need to be a team!
That’s the kind of leadership we need. The kind that’s rooted in service, in sacrifice, in genuine love and concern for others. It’s a mistake to think the leaders do it. The people at the top instruct and correct and put operations into practice but it takes all the other people to do the work. A true leader works with all the others to make good happen. They don’t expect others to do what they’re not willing to do. It isn’t about leading but doing.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
Don’t be fooled by the wolves in sheep’s clothing. They tell people what to do but they don’t do its themselves. They want to appear powerful and carry a big stick. That is not a leader. That’s someone who wants to appear as one, but isn’t. True power is not a bully. It’s someone who can inspire others to aspire to be better together than apart. Good leaders bring people together to go higher. Teamwork is needed! Bad people drive them apart.
Look for the leaders who walk their talk, who live by the principles they espouse, who are willing to put themselves on the line for what they believe in. That’s where you’ll find the true leaders. That’s who you should follow. Choose the kind of person you’d hope your children would grow up to be. Role models matter. If you wouldn’t accept that behavior in your children, don’t accept it in the people you vote for, work for or study with. Be choosy. Think the highest good for all and for long term. Be wise. Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
