“Do you find yourself sitting at home watching television, scrolling on your phone, while munching on a snack and playing a game on your computer, all at the same time? Maybe you’re the type to text while walking or even attempt to juggle work while chatting on social media? Guess what? You’re not alone. We’ve all been there! Multitasking has become a badge of honor in today’s fast-paced world.
Many of us believe that doing more than one thing at a time makes us more productive. However, the reality is quite the opposite. Research shows that multitasking can increase stress, reduce mental clarity, and harm both our physical and emotional well-being. Too much is just too much. When we try to juggle multiple activities at once, we tend to do none of them well. We communicate poorly, make mistakes, and often feel overwhelmed.
Busyness gives the illusion of productivity, but often, we’re just running on a treadmill, not truly getting anywhere. Instead, we are far more effective, and feel more fulfilled, when we give our full attention to one task, finishing it before moving on to the next. There’s a lesson to be learned from Zen practices and meditation: the power of singular focus. Are you truly present? Most likely not if distracted. So, simplify and reclaim your focus

Zen encourages us to be fully present with what we’re doing, to concentrate on the moment, and to connect deeply with whatever task is at hand. This concept of “becoming one with the task” is liberating because it frees us from distractions and the mental clutter that weighs us down. By learning to control the “monkey mind” that jumps from thought to thought, from one task to another, we can truly experience life in the moment.
It’s a lesson most of us need to internalize in today’s hectic world: Slow down. Not only will you be more productive, but you’ll also find yourself feeling calmer and more centered. You don’t need to become a Zen master or meditate for hours each day to reap the benefits of singularity. The practice can be as simple as doing fewer things at once. For example, when you eat, just eat. Savor your food. Chew slowly and focus on each bite.
Don’t check your phone, don’t watch TV, don’t try to work while eating. Simply be present with your meal and appreciate the nourishment it provides. Sure, we often socialize over meals, and there’s great value in that. But when you’re alone, whether at home, on a park bench, or in a quiet restaurant, give yourself the gift of fully immersing in the experience of eating. You may find that food tastes better. Your digestion improves.

You leave the table feeling more satisfied. The same principle applies to everything else in life. When you’re driving, just drive. Don’t eat, don’t text, and don’t apply makeup. Focus on the road and what’s around you. Not only will you be a safer driver, but you’ll also experience a greater sense of calm and control over your surroundings. Simplify to enhance your happiness. You might not meditate, but you should slow down!
When you walk, focus on the act of walking. Notice how your body feels as your feet touch the ground. Pay attention to your surroundings—nature, the city streets, the people passing by. Be fully engaged in the simple joy of moving through the world. Turn off your phone, step away from distractions, and allow yourself to be truly present in real-time, without feeling the urge to snap a photo or post about it online.
Practice being in the moment. Watch how it enhances your awareness and appreciation of life. When you disconnect from constant distractions and reconnect with the present, you will naturally feel happier and more at peace. Take a bath and just be in the bath. Feel the water on your skin. Sip your evening drink, whether it’s a glass of wine or a cup of tea and savor every sip. Let go of the need to do anything else at that moment.

Enjoy the act of relaxation for what it is. Close your eyes and listen to music—not as background noise, but as the sole focus of your attention. Let yourself be absorbed in the sound and notice how different it feels to fully experience it. When you read, just read. Avoid the background hum of television or the constant ping of notifications. Allow yourself to be fully engrossed in the words and the story. One thing at a time. It’s simpler.
It’s healthier. In today’s hyper-connected world, it might not be practical to live like this all the time. However, you can choose moments—whether big or small—throughout your day to simplify. The more you practice doing one thing at a time, the easier it becomes to make those moments count. Over time, you’ll start to crave these focused experiences, because they’ll leave you feeling lighter, clearer, and more grounded.
When you simplify, you’ll notice your mind feels sharper, your body feels more relaxed, and your emotional well-being improves. You’ll experience clarity of thought and peace of mind that is often missing in a life filled with multitasking. Even better, you’ll be more present in your relationships, leading to richer, more rewarding connections with the people you care about. Be present with others and be present with yourself.
