The first step to creating the life you want is realizing that you hold the power to make a difference—starting with your mindset. We all have automatic habitual ways of talking to ourselves less-than-gloriously when things get tough. YOU may even have chronic bad thinking which ensures that things never actually get much better. With poor thinking we just live in some less-than-glorious holding pattern.
In other words, we feel and act stuck, because we are. Then we say we are, which perpetuates remaining stuck. Get it? What you say to yourself, what you think, governs how you feel and behave. You are either inspired and motivated or fatigued and defeated. Your attitude determines what you can and will do. If you speak poorly to or of yourself, you will get poor results. It will not be any other way.

Most of us aren’t aware of how negative we are. Yes, we know some of the negative talk but most of it, because it is habitual, happens outside your awareness. This is why you need to become aware of what you are saying on the inside and the outside and when you are saying it. As you become aware you can make a real and significant difference in how you think, feel, behave and the results you get.
So, how readily do you complain to others? How often do you criticize yourself? You can change this! The key is to manage your self-talk and make it positively influence you. To do this it is necessary to replace a bad habit with a good one. Yes, that may seem difficult but if you do nothing you can be assured that nothing will change. It may seem difficult before you attempt it but it becomes easier the more you do it.
You need to watch what you say to yourself. The more you learn to do the more capable of doing new things more easily and effortlessly AND swiftly you become. All of us can make positive thinking and self-talk automatic! Wouldn’t that be nice? You can too! You need to watch what you say to others about yourself! Watch the words that you speak.

When you talk to yourself and others about yourself, always speak in positive terms. Remember, I’ve said in previous blogs only speak that which blesses, edifies, heals, inspires, prospers and uplifts. Never let the situation, events or others have the upper hand by speaking negatively about yourself or them. Never describe or talk about negative situations because you only reinforce them when you do.
Always speak encouraging, positive, nurturing words to and about yourself. Say positive things you can repeat throughout the day. Repeat them, again and again. While it may take some time to get the hang of this, or for you to see or feel the results, the longer you put off doing this the longer you remain the same. If you want your life to change you have to change things in your life.
You can’t do the same things and expect things to be different. When you truly decide to take charge and be responsible for what you think and do everything in your life can change for the better. One of the easiest and simplest ways to initiate change for yourself is using Directed Questions™. As I previously mentioned these direct your mind without encountering resistance.

Directed Questions™ are not just questions. It’s a method of using natural brain processes to create an opening in your thinking, to stay open and create positive forward movement and momentum. Asking any good question is a good thing. Many people ask the wrong questions, and I address that. But more than just a question it is a question designed to produce specific positive results in your feelings and behaviors.
You’re not asking questions to get an answer. Direct Questions™ produce results and positive outcomes you get to discover along the way to making your life more enjoyable. Consider this? A statement produces an effect. I am confident. Notice whether you feel it or not. If I ask, why am I not confident or why am I confident, notice the different answers. If I say, do you realize you are already confident, again notice.
Any questions good or bad gets an answer. You always get answers whether you like, dislike or understand the answer, BUT Directed Questions™ are more than that. They produce results because you aren’t seeking an answer. You are directing your mind instead to a specific positive result. In this blog I share some questions and affirmations that can be helpful.

I encourage you to learn the process of asking Directed Questions™ because the results can surprise and delight you in how powerful they are. The Directed Question™ process makes it something you are wondering about, so you aren’t creating any conflict. You don’t have the resistance; you might have by making statements or affirmations.
They aren’t looking for answers or reasons but are causing changes in your mindset and behaviors. Directed Questions™ grease the wheel and are an excellent way to begin. You have everything you need inside. The deception we have all bought into is that help comes from the outside. We think money, friends, a better job, car or home, will make us happy.
We put our faith in things or in pills and bottles when we should put our faith in ourselves. YOU are resourceful, whether you currently know it or not! The way to feel better is already within you. Faith in things outside of you won’t help but faith in yourself will! You may not see it yet because of years of previous conditioning. You may even approach these concepts through your old habitual thinking.

How else could you unless you decide to make a change? You want a better life, ask yourself better questions. Learn to control your thoughts and feelings and life will be so much more. Even when troubled times arise you will be better equipped to handle them. You will create and attract and discover more wonderful times too.
You will steer your mental ship where you want to go successfully navigating all waters. We become what we think about day and night. We operate from what consumes us and occupies our mind. You want different results. The first step is you need to decide to think differently. You need to decide it and then do it! You need to act and follow through on your new decision. Do you want your life to be marvelous?
I’m sure you do. Have you ever done the same thing over and over, expecting different results? We all have at some point, but let’s be honest: that’s the definition of insanity. Hoping life will magically improve without changing our actions or thoughts is like expecting a new destination while walking the same road. For instance, Josie, a client in one of my programs, felt stuck in her career for years.

She blamed her boss, the economy, and everything else she could think of. It wasn’t until she started monitoring her self-talk and asking herself better questions that she finally broke free of her rut. Within months, she landed a new job she loved, and her confidence skyrocketed. Josie’s transformation started when she took responsibility for her mindset. She stopped wishing for change and began creating it.
You can too! One of the most impactful ways to begin your transformation is by becoming aware of your self-talk, those automatic thoughts that play in your head throughout the day. Most of us don’t realize how negative our inner dialogue is until we consciously pay attention. We say things like: ‘I’ll never get it right.’ ‘This always happens to me.’ ‘I’m just not good enough.’ These thoughts govern how we feel and act.
They drain our energy, fuel self-doubt, and keep us stuck. Take Misha, for example, another student in my course. Misha struggled with chronic self-criticism. He replaced negative statements with positive affirmations like ‘ am resourceful and capable.’ He began to see small but meaningful changes in his outlook. Over time, this led to dramatic improvements in his relationships and career.

Why does changing your words change your world? Words have incredible power. What you repeatedly tell yourself becomes your reality. If you constantly reinforce negativity, you create a mental environment where success feels impossible. But when you intentionally speak positive, encouraging words, you unlock new possibilities. For example: Instead of saying, ‘I can’t do this,’ ask yourself: ‘How can I make this work?’
Replace ‘I’m always failing”’ with ‘I’m learning and growing every day.’ Stop saying ‘This is too hard’ and start wondering, ‘What’s one small step I can take right now?’ The even faster, easier and more enjoyable way is by using Directed Questions™, a method I teach in my courses, are a powerful way to shift your focus. By asking yourself better questions, you direct your mind toward solutions instead of problems.
I’ve been teaching Directed Questions™ since 1981 in this form although earlier I’d been sharing a slightly different version. This method is powerful and produces results. Faith in yourself is the key. As I’ve pointed out numerous times, we’ve been conditioned to believe happiness comes from external sources—money, relationships, material possessions.
