You recognize that when you are caught up, you are not your best self. You honor that you need a beat, a breath, a reset.

It’s important to know that reactions follow a sequence. It isn’t instant, though it feels that way. First there’s a trigger, something seen, heard, felt. Then a thought, usually lightning-fast and unconscious. Then a feeling. Then a behavior. Like dominoes falling. If you can catch the first one tipping, you can stop the whole chain. Remember that snowball on the mountain top! If not, no worries, just catch it sooner next time.

Another important point is the trigger only lasts an instant. It comes AND goes right away. It’s the pattern, the sequence, it’s what you do next that perpetuates the feelings, good or not good. Get this. The stimulus rises and is over in a second! The reaction or response is what keeps the thoughts and feelings go. One bad thought or feeling leads to another. They come and go. YOU must interrupt that patter, that cycle.

That is how you get free. Each time you catch it earlier, you reclaim a little more of your life, a little more of your power.
