“Alright, let’s dig deep. Some of you might have been rattled by my previous blog. That’s okay. It happens. Some get upset when I suggest how you respond matters and that what we consider objective reality, isn’t objective at all. It is how we react to it or respond to it that matters. Perspective makes a difference. That is true for therapy as well. Some therapies focus on helping the person take charge of their life and become a resilient person.

They encourage the person to be able to handle changes more easily. AND not just handle changes but initiate and maintain the changes they want to make. Others, tend to coddle the person and keep them stuck as a survivor, blaming others and the world around them. Sometimes, it is built into the therapy practice tenants, other times it’s the practitioner. But let’s strip away the specifics for a moment.

Take out all references to therapy, methods, or approaches, and get to the core of what I’m saying. This isn’t about therapy. This isn’t about a single practice or philosophy. It’s about me. It’s about YOU. This is about your locus of control, where you attribute the source of your suffering and your resourcefulness. Are you living life as if you’re ‘at cause’ or ‘at effect’ of others, events and circumstances? That distinction can change everything.

In my life, I’ve decided: I am 100% responsible for my thoughts, my emotions, and my outcomes. No one else. Not god or the universe. Not the government. Not the economy. Not my neighbor, my boss, or my past. NOT EVEN my conditioning from others while growing up. The buck stops here, on my shoulders. This mindset doesn’t mean that external factors don’t exist or that they don’t influence us.

Of course, they do. But here’s the empowering part: you get to decide how you respond. Take Viktor Frankl, for example. In Man’s Search for Meaning, Frankl recounts his time in Nazi concentration camps. Stripped of his freedom and subjected to unimaginable suffering, he realized one undeniable truth: while others could control his external circumstances, they could not control his inner world.

His mindset allowed him to find purpose and meaning even in the darkest of times. This isn’t just theory. It’s practice. It’s choosing to be the driver of your bus instead of a passenger. It’s saying, “Life happens. What I do with it is up to me.” Your circumstances don’t define you. You do! We’ve all faced challenges. Maybe you’ve been through financial struggles, heartbreak, or career setbacks.

It’s easy to point fingers, to blame the boss who fired you, the economy that tanked, or the partner who betrayed you. But here’s the truth: blame keeps you stuck. Responsibility sets you free. Consider this: During economic downturns, some people lose everything and spiral into despair. Others? They build empires. They see opportunities where others see obstacles. Why? Because of their mindset.

Take Donnie, for instance. After losing his job in the 2008 recession, he could have wallowed in self-pity. Instead, he pivoted, started a side hustle, and eventually built a thriving online business. Today, he’s financially free, not because her circumstances were easy, but because he chose to respond differently. There is a turning point where everything can be different. It’s when you notice what isn’t working in your life.

Whether it’s a habit, a thought pattern, or a reaction, don’t beat yourself up. Celebrate the awareness! That’s the turning point. Awareness is the first step toward transformation. Let’s say you catch yourself spiraling into negative self-talk: ‘I’m not good enough,’ ‘This will never work,’ or ‘Why does this always happen to me?’ Instead of criticizing yourself for those thoughts, pause and celebrate the fact that you noticed.

Then, shift your focus. Ask yourself: ‘What CAN I do in this situation?’ ‘How can I turn this into an opportunity?’ ‘What’s the best response I can choose right now?’ Remember: It’s not about perfection. It’s about progress. Each time you catch yourself, redirect your thoughts, and take a small positive action, you’re rewiring your brain for success. Your attitude really does determine your altitude. It’s the number one predictor for success in everything.

Your attitude is everything. It shapes your beliefs, which in turn drive your actions and determine your results. Want better outcomes? Start with better beliefs. Here’s a simple exercise: Every morning, ask yourself, “What’s one thing I can celebrate today?” This shifts your focus from problems to possibilities.
