This isn’t wishful thinking, it’s a power you have whether you’ve ever used it or not. It’s the power of a decision. When you decide with conviction, when you set your mind and heart to it, your life transforms. I’ve mentioned Sarah previously. She’s a single mother who struggled financially for years. She decided to believe that money was abundant, and opportunities would come. Now get this. She DECIDED to believe something different!

She made a choice. She chose! Within months, she started a side business that quickly grew, allowing her to leave her 9-to-5. That is what can happen when you make a powerful, definitive decision and stick with it. Life can be more the way you INTEND it to be, and not haphazard. Then there is James, who battled chronic illness. He decided to trust his body’s capacity to heal, focused on lifestyle changes, and is now healthier than ever.

Research supports these transformations: studies show that mindset shifts lead to measurable changes in behavior and outcomes (Dweck, 2006). Personally, I dislike the notion of limiting beliefs because I find your limiting beliefs are blessings in disguise. Get this it’s important. They highlight what you don’t want, making it easier to identify what you do want. For instance, if you believe ‘money is hard to make,’ choose differently!

You can choose to decide ‘money flows easily to me.’ You use what presents itself as a limitation or something unwanted to shift yourself to what you DO want. Every time a limiting, unwanted, negative thought or feeling comes up it’s a gift. It’s an opportunity to let it go. It’s about awareness. It’s about action. You don’t have to remain limited but can free yourself. Release it. Let it go. Choose the opposite. CHOOSE what you WANT!

If you think, ‘I’m not good enough,’ decide ‘I’m absolutely good enough.’ Such decisions are powerful because they reverse your limiting beliefs, creating a domino effect: new feelings, new actions, and new results. It’s your choice. Stay with what you don’t want or choose something else you do. Choose! Neuroscience confirms this. Neuroplasticity enables us to rewire our thoughts and create new realities by choice! (Doidge, 2007)

One of the most destructive myths is the untrue, limiting belief that you need to know how before deciding. The truth is, the ‘how’ comes after you decide. The Wright Brothers didn’t know how to fly UNTIL after they flew. Prior to that moment they were experimenting. They chose to make something happen. They were choosing to keep going inspite of failures and ridicule. No one thought they could. However, they did because WANTED TO!

They kept deciding to stick with it until they made it happen, and THEY made it happen! When my students, Jennifer decided to improve her health, ideas for better nutrition and exercise naturally surfaced. When Tom decided that life always works out for him, he found solutions to problems he hadn’t even anticipated. Studies on decision-making show that clarity and commitment activate the brain’s reticular activating system.

Our RAS helps us notice opportunities aligned with our goals (Heath & Heath, 2010). Here’s how you uncover hidden beliefs: examine your reactions. If you’re faced with a setback and your immediate thought is, ‘I’m not good enough,’ that belief existed before the setback. The experience didn’t cause the belief. The belief created the experience! What you believe determines what you are capable of noticing, seeing and your experience.

If you consistently feel pressured like there’s never enough time, look at the choices you’ve made. Are they based on the belief that time is scarce? When you decide there’s always enough time, your actions will align to reflect that reality. A new decision creates a new reality. I repeat. THE new decision created THE new reality. Until you make a new decision, you’ll remain trapped in your old reality. STOP perpetuating the old!

The moment you decide differently, everything changes. Mark wanted to grow his business but felt stuck. He decided to believe he had all the resources he needed. Within weeks, partnerships and clients seemed to appear out of nowhere. As Einstein said, ‘The most important decision you make is whether you live in a friendly or hostile universe.’ When you decide to see the universe as friendly, you drop resistance.

When you congruently decide you align all your inner resources. When this happens, you are more able to see the infinite possibilities, opportunities and resources within and around you. The key to transforming is commitment. The Wright Brothers were committed. Edison committed. Edwin C. Barnes committed. The little girl who needed 50 cents, committed. They knew what they wanted. They decided and committed.

That’s why Carnegie and Hill say, make an informed, accurate decision quickly but be slow to change it. Commit to the decision and adjust as necessary to make it happen. Persist in it. They did. You can! True decisions are absolute. The word ‘decide’ comes from the Latin root meaning ‘to cut off.’ To decide is to eliminate all other options. Too often, people ‘decide’ without commitment, only to revert to old patterns when challenges arise.

Consider R U Darby and his uncle. According to Hill, they found gold, then couldn’t find it. They threw in the towel. They decided to go for the gold then decided to quit. They un-decided. They changed their decision from find the gold to cut losses and bail. They sold out and the landowner, got rich because they stopped 3 feet from gold. He dug where they didn’t. That decision, caused Darby to decide ‘no’ is never an acceptable answer.

He became wealthy in insurance because he decided to stick with it even when he encountered the ‘no’. He became a successful salesman. The Wright Brothers, Oprah, Steve Jobs, Edison, the little girl, Lady Gaga, Michael Jordan, Charles Schwab, and other examples persisted. That is the meaning of ‘burn the boats.’ Cut off your escape route. Pursue plan A. Don’t dabble. Don’t fall back on plan B. Decide to prevail and you can!

Faith is required, especially in the early stages of a new decision. Research shows that accountability and support are critical for sustaining behavior change (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1983). Surround yourself with people who reinforce your empowered decisions. AND as Hill and Carnegie implore you, develop the certainty that you will make happen what you intend to make happen. If it is to come true, it is up to you.

Repeat this, ‘if it is to be, it is up to me.’ Now is the time to take charge. Assess your life. What results are you producing? What do they reveal about your decisions? Identify the beliefs holding you back when they arise and present themselves. Don’t buckle under them or perpetuate them, change them. Decide differently. Replace old, limiting beliefs with new powerful ones. Decide you are worthy, capable, and destined for success.

Decide that life is on your side. Commit with conviction. Remember, transformation begins not with wishful thinking but with decisive action. Cut off the old beliefs and claim your new reality. Your future is waiting, but only you can decide to step into it. You either are the captain of your soul and the master of your fate or you are not. Either way, those are beliefs. Choose ones that serve you. Release the ones that don’t.
