“Are you focused on what you want, or are you stuck on what you don’t want? Many people don’t know but there’s an easy way to tell; pay attention to your feelings. Think of your emotions as a built-in signaling system, guiding you toward what you want and away from what you don’t. Learning to recognize these signals empowers you to take control and make lasting, positive changes in your life.

How to make the shift. When you feel good; joyful, hopeful, peaceful, or inspired, it’s a clear signal that you’re aligned with what you truly desire. These positive feelings indicate you’re focusing on something you want. In contrast, when negative emotions or what I prefer to call less-than-glorious feelings arise, frustration, anxiety, anger, or fear, they serve as indicators that you’re thinking about what you don’t want.

Let’s say you’re feeling frustrated about your work situation. This frustration isn’t just discomfort; it’s your internal signal telling you that you’re dwelling on what’s not working, perhaps on your dissatisfaction or lack of progress. Instead, you could shift focus to imagining or visualizing what you want in a job, maybe a role that allows growth, creativity, or more freedom. This refocuses your attention on what you do want.

DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF

Focus on what you do want ultimately changes how you feel about the situation. Get it? Your feelings are your internal signal system. My hope for you is that you understand the impact of your thoughts, so you do something about them, if you don’t like the results you’ve been getting. Whatever you think about most is what you tend to attract into your life. Whether you think mostly positively or negatively. Doesn’t matter.

When you continually focus on negative things, people you don’t like, events or circumstances, frustrations, fears, or complaints, those thoughts influence how you feel and perpetuate the exact circumstances you’d like to avoid. This is sometimes referred to as a “negative feedback loop.” As you think more negative thoughts, your brain reinforces neural pathways that make these patterns habitual. What goes around comes around.

Studies on ‘thought-action fusion,’ the psychological concept where we connect thoughts too closely with outcomes, show that focusing on negative thoughts increases stress and anxiety, affecting your mood and behavior. Practicing gratitude or shifting focus to solutions, on the other hand, re-wires these pathways toward positivity and resilience. Can you tell which is which? Are there common signals that you’re on a wrong track?

Here’s a way to recognize when you’re focusing on what you don’t want. When you’re critical of yourself or others, you’re likely focused on the negative, which keeps you feeling stuck. Notice when your self talk is critical of yourself or you are doubting yourself in any way. Whenever you’re blaming or complaining whether that’s about others or yourself. Focusing on those signals you, your attention is on what you don’t like.

If you’ve persistent worries or anxiety it signals a fear-based focus, typically around things you don’t want to happen. If you’re frequently or generally irritable or frustrated know that these feelings often arise when we dwell on what’s lacking in our lives. Notice, these signals are valuable.

Recognizing them can help you shift your mindset back to what you desire. So, begin to pay attention. These signals are opportunities to shift your focus and reclaim your positivity and enhance your health, happiness, relationships, wealth and success. You can shift your focus and reclaim your life.
