“During my ‘Create Your Best Life With Rex’ show with guest Jairek Robbins a wonderful person named Jordan posted this study as an example about repetition, practice and improvement. It’s worth knowing that using spaced repetition, consistent correct practice for a long enough period can overwrite habits we want to change by developing new neural wiring resulting in new positive reliable habits.
It also demonstrates that any skill you want to improve on can be improved. The following is the study Jordan shared. Over a 30-day time span there were two groups of art students. One group was given 30 days to make a piece of pottery and one group was given 30 days to make one each day. Which group had the most beautiful piece of artwork? The one group who did 30 in 30 days.
Research into the Placebo Effect has numerous studies. One powerful example has 3 groups of subjects. One group does dumbbell curls, a certain weight, a certain number of repetitions daily. The other group is to only visualize or imagine doing the same weight and number. The last group, the control group is not told anything and does nothing. 1st Group improved in size and strength 35% 2nd group 17% 3rd None.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
Some people have said, well 17% is not significant. BUT consider this. All that group did was IMAGINE lifting the dumbbell repeatedly and they had nearly half the improvement that the group lifting the dumbbell had. WOW! DO you understand this? The group that did nothing, got 0. The group that imagined it got 17% and the group that did it improved the most. Here’s the rub. It’s with the 1st group.
We don’t know that they didn’t also visualize while doing it or thinking about it later. It’s difficult to tell someone to not do something. Don’t think of a blue elephant with a monkey on its back wearing a yellow hat flying around the room. Get it? One group only visualized. The other group acted and possibly, perhaps probably visualized while doing it. ALL weightlifters know the power of visualizing and mirrors.
Practice as the pottery group did or as the 1st and 2nd group in the dumbbell study did and you will get results. Spaced repetition of consistent, correct practice for long enough produces results. Want to be more positive? Practice positivity and optimism. Want to be healthier? Practice eating, sleeping or exercising right. Get it? Practice and visualize. Use your imagination AND do it.
