“During these confusing times, when information from the top down is confusing at its best, what should you do? Who can you believe? What about science? Even science is being politicized and used from opposite sides to sway the people. What can you do?
Let’s get to that in a moment, but why this, why now? Because there is an ongoing assault on good science by the not-so-good science. Legitimate research and results are being out-shouted by the questionable science. We need to differentiate. Stop quackery.
Consider this. To put faith in science is the opposite of science. No legitimate scientist would suggest this, because it is the opposite of what science strives to do. Science doesn’t strive to believe things. Legitimate science strives to present accurate findings.
Be Skeptical But Be Willing To Listen – Stay Open – Be Thoughtful
Legitimate science strives to present the best possible description of that which we are trying to understand, and update as necessary. Sadly, findings or results are often manipulated to sell ideology or products. Media reports on findings are often too early.
Science strives to disprove things (hypothesis) and when it can’t it uses its findings as a description of what may be the case, what we know for the time being, until a better description is possible. Science updates its description as new evidence becomes available.
Legitimate science that is. Not everything claimed in the name of science comes from the well-practiced scientific method. Not all science or results reported, equal. There are proponents of science for profit, politics, or science for faith, other than accurate discovery.
Be Open And Skeptical Of Everything – Be Willing To Be Wrong
Science is meant to be a description of how we think things work. Good science doesn’t readily accept the findings of one study, but requires replication, legitimate peer review, and/or meta-analysis prior to promoting a theory or finding. It seeks scientific consensus.
Getting results published is a political and profitable process. Popular journals may not want to include new theories. The old guard doesn’t want to change. What to do? To be better informed in science, politics and whatever, you need to become an investigator.
Legitimate science doesn’t claim to know or have all the answers. Good science tells you what it understands to be the case for now and will update as more relevant and reliable information becomes available. Good science doesn’t try to persuade you religiously.
Be Willing To Learn From Mistakes – Adjust And Continue
Good sciences suggest you, like good science, seek the answers. Make informed decisions. Don’t be gullible. Don’t be a true believer. Be skeptical but be open. Be willing to adjust your thinking as new results come in. Don’t be closed-minded AND don’t be stupid.
You need to do the leg work of a detective. You need to collect and assemble data and stay open. Don’t buy into anything too quickly. It is the quick decision, the emotional appeal influencers rely on. Vet what you see, hear and read. Opinions and disinformation are rampant. Do the legwork. Seek accurate information from a variety of legitimate, reliable, accurate outlets. Review, consider carefully and decide. It should all pass the smell test, too. All the while celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
