“Who is really in charge of your life? Is it you, or are external distractions and habits running the show? We often like to believe we’re the ‘Boss’ of our own lives, confidently in control of our choices and direction. But take a moment to ask yourself, are you truly the one calling the shots, or have you unwittingly given power to distractions, habits, and limitations? If you’re not consciously in charge, you can bet something else is.
Guess what? Those external forces don’t care about your happiness, success, or well-being. Think about it: Whatever distracts you from designing and living the life you truly want, whatever pulls you away from maintaining a positive mindset and moving toward your goals, that is your Boss! If you’re not steering the ship, those distractions and limitations are at the helm, dictating the course of your life.
When you’re not in control, you’re drifting off-course, possibly far away from the dreams and desires you’ve set for yourself. This ‘Boss’ could be anything. It could be your comfort zone, bad habits, mindless entertainment, or the opinions of others. If you’re spending more time binge-watching TV, scrolling social media, gaming, or going out for drinks instead of working toward your goals, then those distractions have become your Boss.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
They are preventing you from reaching the success, happiness, and fulfillment that you deserve. I’ve told you Steve Jobs had a ‘reality distortion field.’ Jobs often spoke about how he learned to say ‘no’ to distractions. He once said, ‘Focus is about saying no.’ Jobs understood that if he let every little thing demand his attention, if he allowed distractions to be the Boss, he’d never be able to build Apple into the global success it became.
Jobs controlled his focus and priorities, which allowed him to make innovative decisions that changed the tech industry forever. You must be the boss of your own life because your habits decide who runs the show! Your habits determine who the true Boss is in your life. If you don’t take charge of your habits, they’ll take charge of you. Letting whims, poor time management, or instant gratification dictate your day means you aren’t in control.
You’ve handed control over to forces that don’t have your best interests in mind. What does this mean? Your habits are formed through the conditioning growing up and more. You learned them deliberately or not. Most of them you acquired outside of your awareness. They are habits of thoughts, feelings and deeds. Your brain attempts to keep you consistent with what you’ve already learned to keep you consistent, surviving and thriving.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
It doesn’t realize or know these are good or bad. It just repeats what it has learned. So, if it doesn’t serve you in being who you want to be, it doesn’t serve you. It just keeps doing what it has learned to do until you train it to do what you intentionally want instead. Let’s say you want to start your own business, but instead of dedicating time each day to building it, you get sidetracked by Netflix or social media. Those distractions are your Boss.
You didn’t make the decision to build your future; instead, your habits, like procrastination, took over. Over time, this behavior keeps you from achieving your goals. You don’t like it but the brain is only doing what it learned to do. Instead of complaining, take charge and learn new habits. Serena Williams is one of the most successful tennis players in history. Serena didn’t let anything else become the Boss of her career.
From a young age, she developed habits that aligned with her goals, whether it was practicing for hours each day or maintaining a strict diet and fitness regimen. Her habits were directly tied to her success, because she consciously chose them. She made sure that she was the Boss of her own life, not distractions, not fear, not temptation. It’s no coincidence that she’s become a legend in her field. Winning requires focus and discipline.

To win, you must stay focused. You can’t give in to distractions or allow the sidelines to pull you away from the race. The greatest successes come from those who keep their eyes on the prize, pace themselves, and give it their all. Anything less makes it unlikely you’ll finish first, or even finish at all. Plus, it’s easy to get caught up in comparing yourself to others. Comparisons are another trap that can take control of your focus.
You might see someone who seems to have every advantage, more resources, better connections, more talent—Don’t let the success or the perceived advantages of others prevent you from giving your all. Keep in mind that no matter how gifted or advantaged someone else seems, they too can lose focus, get distracted, or fail to finish the race. We all put our pants on one leg at a time. What matters is how you stay disciplined in your own journey.
J.K. Rowling faced numerous rejections before the success of Harry Potter. It’d have been easy for her to compare herself to more established writers and give up. But she didn’t let distractions or comparisons stop her. She stayed focused on her craft, continued to write, and eventually became one of the most successful authors of all time. Rowling made herself the Boss of her own life. That decision changed the course of literary history.

It’s not just about saying ‘yes’ to the right opportunities. It’s also about saying ‘no’ to distractions. The things that seem small and harmless can snowball into major roadblocks if left unchecked. Warren Buffet is one of the most successful investors of all time. He’s known for his ability to focus relentlessly on his goals. Buffett understands that to maintain control and be the Boss of your life, you need to say ‘no’ more often than you say ‘yes.’
When asked the secret to success, he said, ‘The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything.’ Distractions, even if they seem small, can derail your progress. By controlling what you give your time and energy to, you ensure that you stay in the driver’s seat. Remember, 1% change in a positive direction result in exponential success 365 days later.
But 1% daily in a negative direction result in that same but opposite exponential change. Don’t let little things prevent you from enjoying the big things AND don’t let the big things prevent you from enjoying the little things in life. Don’t fight the distractions. What you resist, persists. Let them go. Release them instead. Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t. Realize you have the power, the resourcefulness and opportunity to do this.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
So how do you take back control and become the Boss of your own life? It starts with small but intentional changes. Here are a few practical steps to make the shift and take control back today! 1. Identify your distractions. Take a close look at your daily habits and routines. What activities are stealing your time, energy, and focus? Is it mindless scrolling on your phone, hours spent watching TV? Is it complaining and gossiping?
Are you hanging out with people who don’t add value to your life? Identify the distractions that are running the show. 2. Set clear goals. Once you’ve identified the distractions, set clear, actionable goals for yourself. What do you really want to achieve? Whether it’s advancing your career, improving your health, or building better relationships, make sure your goals are front and center in your daily life. Once identified you can pursue them.
3. Develop new, productive habits.Start building habits that support your goals. If you want to write a book, commit to writing for an hour every day. If you want to improve your fitness, carve out time for exercise. By creating habits that align with your goals, you ensure that you are the one running the show, not external distractions. I tell you this all the time. Correct, consistent repetition for long enough is how habits are formed.

4. Stick With It.Discipline is key. There will always be temptations to take the easy road or to indulge in activities that don’t move you closer to your goals. But success comes to those who remain disciplined and focused. Think of every distraction you resist as a step closer to your dreams. 5. Stop Comparing. The grass might look greener on the other side, but comparing yourself to others is a losing game. Focus on your race.
Your journey is unique, and the more you concentrate on your own progress, the less power distractions and comparisons will have over you. Instead of worrying about others, decide to be your own boss starting now. Consider this your wake-up call. Take a moment right now to ask yourself, who is the Boss of my life? If the answer isn’t a resounding ‘me,’ then it’s time to make a change. You don’t have to overhaul everything at once.
Start small. Pick one distraction that’s been controlling your time, maybe it’s TV, maybe it’s social media—and commit to reducing it, just for today. Replace that time with one step toward your goal. If you want to write a book, write a page today. If you’re building a business, spend an hour brainstorming or researching. If you’re working on your health, take that walk or hit the gym. YOU decide what the next step is.

Just make sure it’s a step forward. As you make these changes, watch how the power shifts back into your hands.
