“Someone posted a meme that read: “learned yesterday that there’s a term for phrases like “It is what it is,” “It’s in God’s hands,” “YOLO.” etc— things meant to short-circuit cognitive dissonance & end discussion. They’re called “Thought-Terminating Cliches” and I haven’t stopped thinking about that phrase since.”
Sure, according to some, or someone, who determined it as such. Any phrase might be used in any way or fashion to end thinking, conversation or to promote it. Many things are really “no” things meant to label a process or behavior usually by psychologists.
Actually, the thing name is not the thing. While those phrases could be used that way one could also call them “Thought-Affirming Cliches” meant to promote thinking along different lines rather than accepting the obvious. Perception is everything. Thinking is directed.
Change Your Thoughts And Transform Your Life
It is difficult to get the mind to stop. I’m sure you have tried. It is far easier to re-direct it or observe it. It is not meant to be stopped. It is meant to serve us. It serves us best when we train it how to serve us instead of letting it run on and on all on its own. This is the point of mindset and attitude training. Get it? Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
