“Over the next few posts, I want to provide tips, suggestions, principles and practices you can implement to tip the odds in your favor and keep your brain healthy. So, let’s begin. There are simple things you can do. Eat right. Avoid chemicals, pesticides and processed foods. Get enough sleep. Get fresh air and sunshine. Make sure you are taking care of your physical self. Stop neglecting yourself.
Feel better and you think better. Think better and you feel better. It’s all part of one cybernetic loop. Mind, body, brain and spirit are all part of one synergistic, simultaneous and sequential system. Exercise and move your body more than you sit or rest. We were designed to move, not to sit in artificial light all day and night. Move more during your day. Take breaks, get up and walk.
Every 30 minutes or so get up and walk around for a few minutes. Do some one-minute exercises sitting in a chair or standing up. If every 30 minutes you do some simple exercises for a minute you keep your body and mind moving and more flexible. I teach contra-lateral movements or cross-crawling in my programs and recommend those and some nimble finger exercises.
Move your body. Move your fingers. Practice scales on the piano for example. You can find many of these online or on youtube. Cross crawl, do your finger exercises as previously described. Write with paper and pen more. Writing by hand is marvelous for the brain! Do things differently, use your other hand to eat, write, shave, brush teeth etc. Add novelty! Break up your patterns and routines.
Try new things. Take different routes to school or work. Play games. Stimulate yourself to think differently. Work out math problems. Put puzzles together. Find ways to move your body and mind more and you will feel better and better. Keep active! Improve your concentration. Gaze at a candle or dim light and keep your attention on the light. Start with five minutes and work your way up to 30.
Whenever you become aware your attention wanders, return to concentrating on the light. Do this in increasing time increments. Pretty soon you will be able to concentrate on what you want to concentrate on with fewer self-distractions. Bit by bit, day by day you improve your mind, body, emotional and spiritual health easily in step-by-step fashion. Practice finding things to be grateful for and celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
