“Some of these practices are physical as when you dance with such abandon. When you become the dance, you stop thinking. Some involve ‘just being’ the activity you’re doing. For example, just wash the dish. Do nothing more in mind or body. Sit and gaze at the wall. Do no more or no less. Eat and taste your food. Do nothing more. Notice it. There’s a wide variety of beneficial meditation approaches you can discover.
Another way is to be the watcher. Be the witness. Be the impartial observer. Impartial is the key word. No judgement. Pure observation. Just notice. Just look. Just here. Just feel. Just taste. Just smell. ‘Just’ means without labeling. Without going off on thought-tangents. Whenever you drift off into something else and become aware of it steer back without judging what you did. Just notice. Be aware without self-critique.
Sit or lie back relaxed and watch your thoughts. Whatever they are just notice. Don’t judge. Look as they come and go. Positive or not. Avoid getting hooked. As leaves float down a stream or river so do our thoughts. Let them float by on the screen of your mind. Just watch. Lie back and watch the clouds move through the sky. Merely watch them flow by. Don’t engage with them. Listen to the wind. Just listen.
Taste what you taste. Smell the smells. JUST do it. If you get caught up in judging or entertaining any thought, let them go when you notice what you are doing. Simply return to witnessing without criticizing yourself for having gone astray. Everything is okay. Free yourself from the need to criticize or comment on how you are doing. Let it go and just do the process. Validate instead of negating! Take time and get good.
When you are ready do it with another person. Just watch and observe without judgement. Notice without comment. Listen to someone else without critique. Don’t label their thoughts or discussion or them as good or bad or right or wrong. Listen for the sake of listening. Pay attention for the sole sake of paying attention. Do nothing to interfere with them or their point of view. Simply listen. Absorb. Allow.
Let all else go. You will be learning something of great importance. You will learn only from experience of doing how not to get hooked. How to avoid going into the rabbit hole alone or with others. You will be freeing yourself up of conditioning and learning to be authentic instead of captured by another’s thoughts, or your own. Get this and you get a lot. Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
