“Yesterday, I wrote about perseverance. Today, I want to show you what is possible. Watch this brief video. It’s under three minutes. The video is everything you need to know and do. Attitude and commitment is everything. You may think, ‘well, it doesn’t always work out this way.’ And for you, you might be correct. For those who think otherwise, they may discover it’s possible to do what is considered impossible. Become unstoppable in attitude!

Even if you don’t get ‘winning’ results, what you did was to continue to go for it. Never let anything prevent you from doing what you can to fulfill your positive intentions. Persevere, even when it seems unlikely. What you see here is attitude and action! If it is possible for one person, it is possible for many. In fact, it’s possible for all, whether all do it is up to each of them. Remember, Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile barrier.

He did what was considered by all, impossible. Doctors and scientists argued it was impossible and even dangerous for the human body to run a mile in under 4 minutes. Yet, Bannister did it. 46 days after Bannister broke the record, John Landy beat his time. Over the next few years, more and more people broke four minutes. As of 2022 1,755 athletes have done it. Bannister’s speed was 3:59.4

Today it’s considered standard in numerous cultures for professional athletes to run a mile in less than 4 minutes. The fastest time to date is 16 seconds less at 3:34.13 by Hitcham El Guerrouj. So, a little about the first person to break the record, Bannister. He came from common stock. He was not born rich or superior to others. HIs family was ordinary working class. He had hoped to go into medicine as a young child.

However, his parents realized they probably would never be able to pay for it. He found he loved running, trained hard and got a scholarship to Oxford. He competed in the 1952 Olympics, came in 4th, and failed to medal. He took losing hard and almost gave up running but after about 8 weeks he regrouped and decided to make the best of his loss, the suffering and the humiliation of defeat. He used that to motivate him to do better.

He believed in his abilities and continued to train, intending to beat the 4:01 record set in the 40s. No one had beat it and experts considered it impossible. On May 6, 1954, 6 runners competed. Bannister won, setting the new record. I like the way his record-breaking feat is described. ‘Once you stop believing something is impossible, it becomes possible.’ As Henry Ford said,‘I never let what I cannot do prevent me from what I can.’

What have we learned from this? Never settle. Stop believing things can’t work or that you can’t do something and start believing you can. Attitude is the determining factor. Keep what you intend to do and keep pursuing it. Don’t let feedback or ‘failure’ get you down. Manage your mindset and keep going. Bannister decided to write his own success story. He believed in himself when no-one did. He picked himself up and kept going after failing.

He worked harder because he knew the other racers were great. He lived life on his terms. He took charge to accomplish what he set out to do. He set an intention and worked at it until he got it. He wrote later, ‘People said there may be a barrier, you can’t keep on running faster. Is four minutes the barrier? I knew enough medicine and physiology to know it wasn’t a physical barrier, but I think it had become a psychological barrier.’

In 1955, he said, “I’d like to see (his record) as a metaphor not only for sport but for life and seeking challenges.” Why is Roger Bannister remembered today after so many others broke his record? Even shortly after he broke the four-minute mile, Landy broke Bannister’s time. Why? Because he was the first. Let this inspire you. You could be the first among many to do the impossible if you stop believing it’s impossible and decide to go for it.

Even if you aren’t the first you will have discovered your greatness. Scores of others have run a mile in under a minute. What was once impossible, became possible. Let that resound in your being. What once was thought to be impossible, became possible. That is true of so many things. Humans would never fly. We do. Television, radio and wi-fi are ‘thoughts and words’ sent invisibly through the air. You and I can change the world.
Activate your attitude. Make things happen. Keep going when things seem tough. Believe you can and discover you might just be right. Remember Ford’s other famous saying. ‘If you think you can or you think you can’t, you are correct.’It truly is whatever you make up your mind to believe that matters. Bannister did it. Look at what Heather Dorniden overcame to win. She picked herself up and raced ahead of the others. She truly came from behind. Her heart, mind and soul were completely in it.
