“What does this frustration tell me about what I really want?’ Use this insight to pivot your focus toward your desired outcome. Practicing this regularly trains your brain to view negative emotions as helpful markers rather than obstacles. Your inner guidance system, or emotional ‘GPS,’ is designed to help you self-correct. When you feel ‘less-than-glorious,’ that’s your internal compass telling you to shift your direction.

Develop an awareness of these signals and view them as opportunities for realignment. That’s the key to making the positive changes you desire. So, learn to fine tune your GPS by having regular self-check-ins. Set a timer on your phone or watch for several times a day.

When it goes off, take a moment to ask, ‘How am I feeling right now?’ Be honest and notice if you’re feeling positive, neutral, or negative. Over time, these check-ins make it easier to spot and respond to your emotional signals before they become overwhelming. Get some crayons and color code your emotions on a blank piece of paper. Assign colors to different emotions (blue for calm, red for frustration, green for joy, etc.).

Track how you feel throughout the day by coloring in blocks on your chart. After a week, look for any patterns: do certain times, places, or situations trigger specific emotions? This tool can reveal your typical emotional landscape and help you notice shifts in your mood with more clarity. Set up an accountability partner. Ask a friend or family member to act as your ‘blind spot partner.’

Let them know you’re working on recognizing when you feel ‘less-than-glorious, and ask them to gently point it out if they notice you seem off-track. When they do, avoid reacting defensively; instead, use it as a chance to reflect and refocus. If you really want to speed up your changes, when they point something out, celebrate it. Be glad and grateful. It’s important to recognize your blind spots and they’re helping you. Love them more for it.

Your emotional ‘blind spots’ come from habits you’ve formed over years of responding in automatic ways. Awareness is the first step to shifting these habits. By becoming mindful of your emotional state, even subtly, you open the opportunity to consciously change your responses and realign with what you truly want. Every time you notice yourself feeling frustrated, angry, or anxious, ask yourself, ‘What’s the shift I need to make?’

Then make it right then. Cultivating awareness is key to creating a life aligned with your goals and values. When you can recognize and respond to emotional signals, you’re no longer a passive observer. You’re actively creating your experience.
