“Some THINK positive thinking is difficult. Get this! Some say it is difficult because they believe it is difficult. If you believe something to be the case, THEN it most likely is the case. They may say they tried it and found it difficult. They don’t believe it, they say. They claim it is their experience. It is reality for them. Yep, well that’s how it works. Beliefs set the frame. Beliefs organize our perceptions.
If you believe something to be difficult you expect it to be difficult. Then it certainly may be. If you then find it to be difficult, voila’ you’ve just experienced the power of self-fulfilling prophecy. You know people hate to be proven wrong. They seek confirmation bias. So, they look for it to be hard because they believe it to be hard. Because they believe it is hard, it is hard. Silly, rabbit, ‘tricks’ are for kids.
It works the same way if you believe something to be easy. What we find to be the case IS most often a matter of what we THINK it to be in the first place. Our attitude determines your altitude. Believe it and you will see it! There is a lot of research backing all this up. The Placebo and Nocebo Effect demonstrate this. There is now a lot of research proving this effect and the power of beliefs.
Look into it. If you believe something (a pill, an exercise, an amulet, chicken soup, anything) will help you, it certainly may. It’s more than likely it will. Research has demonstrated that you can get statistically significant (positive) results, even when there is nothing about it to make that so. This is the Placebo Effect. It is what we believe that’s important! This effect is always in operation. Get this.
If you believe nothing will help you, then even though there are medicines and practices and foods (and yes, maybe even amulets) that typically do help, you may not experience the benefits. This is the Nocebo Effect. Nothing may help if you believe nothing will. This effect is always in operation. Whenever you eat, take medicine or engage in some practice, your beliefs are always in operation.
These effects are well-studied and documented. Their results are well known, but not so well understood or put to good practice. At times, doctors, researchers and others who SHOULD know better. may even dismiss something as ‘it is just the placebo effect’. WOW, that is the height of folly. The practitioner of medicine’s oath is to first do no harm. Their job is to support healing and health.
If you go to a medical practitioner having eaten a pear (or anything) and tell that person you magically feel better (because you do) and they say to you, ‘that is just the placebo effect’ then they have just violated their oath to ‘first do no harm’. They should say ‘FANTASTIC”, you are feeling better and continue to investigate the medical issue as necessary. They should not spoil a positive effect!
Even the medication you take (that has active ingredients demonstrated to benefit) or a practice you engage in IS subject to working because of the Placebo Effect. You believe it will benefit you and it does. These work together and are not isolated. It isn’t one or the other. They work together in concert. Your beliefs assist the process. It’s why Jesus could say, ‘your faith has made you whole.’
Beliefs work in concert with the ingredients to bring about positive change OR they work in opposition. The best combination of beliefs supporting the changes you want IS the healthiest practice. The most positive outlook and expectation is the wisest choice. You want everything aimed positively! You must have a powerful, congruent, positive outlook and attitude that serves you to get what you desire.
It has also been demonstrated that even the care of a compassionate caregiver may be enough to help heal because the person believes in the caregiver. It isn’t that their faith is in the caregiver to heal them, although it could be. It is that they believe the caregiver cares and is helping them. The positive regard they receive from the caregiver, the feelings, may encourage this belief and the belief helps.
It’s been demonstrated that the doctor’s belief in the prescribed medicine can help the patient to believe and to benefit as well. This is so incredibly cool! It speaks volumes about our abilities to benefit ourselves and each other. If the doctor gives you a medicine but secretly doesn’t believe it will help the patient, even though the doctor says it will, it may be that the patient doesn’t improve. Why?
Because the doctor’s nonverbal behaviors leak that the doctor doesn’t believe it. The patient may not consciously notice this, but at some level realizes something is not congruent. There’s a discord. They’ve demonstrated this phenomenon in double blind studies. When the doctor believes the medicine will help it is more likely to help. The patient, again, picks up the subtle congruent clues. Pretty cool.
I could go on and on. Check into it because it will prove a rewarding study. So, if you think changing your thoughts is difficult, that may be the first belief you want to change! Why be stuck with thinking things are difficult or unlikely. If we are more apt to find what we look for and get what we expect to get, then decide to find goodness, love, kindness, success, happiness and be open to receiving them.
It can be easy, and it can be exciting and it can even be fun. You, your mindset, determines what it will be. Start out by expecting the best. Have some fun! Prove it to yourself. Decide to keep telling yourself it is fun, easy, and good until you believe it. After all, we come to believe things the more it is repeated. We come to accept things as normal the more we are exposed to it. Use this to program yourself for all the good. Stop making things hard for you. Enjoy more of life. Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
