“These seemingly insignificant thoughts, the passing complaints, the small annoyances, the focus on what’s wrong rather than what’s right, this is what keeps people stuck. It’s not just the big, catastrophic thinking that derails success. It’s the ongoing mental habits, the subtle undercurrent of negativity, that shape our reality more than we realize. Research in neuroscience has shown that our brains have a negativity bias.

The naming of this is unfortunate. That process the brain goes through IS a survival mechanism designed to keep us aware of threats. It should be called a survival bias. It isn’t negativity. It’s finding danger and threats. Negativity is a judgement a human makes about another or an event. So many miss this distinction. But sometimes you can’t save a fool from oneself. If you understand what I mean.

Dr. Rick Hanson, a neuroscientist and author of Hardwiring Happiness, explains that negative experiences and thoughts stick to our brains like Velcro, while positive ones slide off like Teflon. This means that unless we actively work to redirect our focus, we are naturally inclined to dwell on problems rather than possibilities. The problem is, what we think about most of the time determines our reality.

Again, how this is presented is somewhat off too. It’s not that positive slide off, it’s that we’ve conditioned ourselves growing up to focus on the one kind of thinking over the other. Our habitual thoughts shape our beliefs, our emotions, and ultimately our actions. If our thoughts are unfocused, critical, or full of minor complaints, then our lives reflect that. We drift, unsure of what we really want, and wonder why things don’t improve.

On the other hand, when we take control of our thinking, when we deliberately focus on what we want, when we train our minds to see opportunities instead of obstacles, everything changes. The fact we can take charge of our thinking successfully should indicate that the scientific naming and description of this process is less than accurate.

That said, I’ve seen this firsthand, not just in my own life but in the lives of countless people I’ve coached. I used to think I was just “being realistic” when I focused on what could go wrong or when I let small irritations take up my mental space. I didn’t realize that by doing so, I was keeping myself locked in a cycle of struggle and frustration.

The moment  I became aware of my thought patterns and made the commitment to change, my entire world shifted. So, how do you shift out of negative thinking? How do you train your mind to work for you instead of against you? The first step is awareness. Start paying attention to your thoughts throughout the day. Catch yourself in those moments of complaint, worry, or distraction.

You don’t need to judge yourself—just notice. Once you become aware, you can begin to redirect your focus. The next step is to consciously replace negative thoughts with positive, productive ones. This doesn’t mean ignoring reality or pretending everything is perfect. It means choosing to focus on solutions rather than problems, on gratitude rather than lack, on what you can do rather than what you can’t.

When you catch yourself complaining about traffic, for example, shift your focus to appreciation.Be grateful you have a car, grateful you have somewhere to go, grateful for the music or podcast you can listen to while you wait. Dr. Martin Seligman, the founder of positive psychology, has shown through decades of research that optimism is not just a personality trait, it’s a skill that can be developed.

Optimistic people and so called negative people train their minds to see the world differently. Optimistic people train to see the good not the bad.

They learn to respond to threats and perceived dangers differently AND the benefits are extraordinary. Studies have shown that people who practice gratitude and optimism have stronger immune systems, lower levels of stress, and greater success in their careers and relationships.
