“Encountered this wonderful meme again recently, “Be brave enough to suck at something new.” Bravo to the first person who ever uttered those words. We always tend to suck at new things. What keeps people from trying is we don’t want to look bad.

Our culture tends to enforce the concept that you’re never enough. That the prime objective of public relations. It is/was when Edward Bernays founded the field. Every major ‘big wig’ wanted Bernays formula for propagandizing the consumer into feeling ‘less than.’

He moved us from a need buying culture to a want culture in order to sell more products and increase profits for the big companies of the day. We’re taught we’re smelly, flakey, with yellow teeth and greasy skin. We suck. We lack. We need and we want to be better.

We whine, complain and blame when trying it that ‘we are really better than this and it’s silly and stupid.” Everything we do the first time IS because we haven’t done it before! We get better with practice. Whatever we want to master we must first suck at.

Want to play the piano. The first time you try, it’s not that easy. Keep at it and you’ll get better. You will miss much in life if you let a bad attitude prevent you from doing things you could enjoy. Don’t let cultural conditioning and image management hold you back.
