Mel Blanc Man of A Thousand Voices – cartoon characterization
suffered a critical accident. Here’s the story:
The accident occurred on the night of January 24, 1961, when Blanc was driving his sports car through the dark streets of Los Angeles. He was navigating a notorious stretch of Sunset Boulevard known as “Dead Man’s Curve” when his car was hit by an oncoming vehicle. The 18-year-old driver of the other car sustained only minor injuries, but Blanc was not so fortunate.
He was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center with both of his legs fractured, multiple ribs broken, and his pelvis shattered. The most severe injury was a triple skull fracture. Blanc’s condition was critical, and he remained in a coma for two weeks. His family and doctors were unable to get a response from him. Doctors were unsure if he would ever recover, and his prognosis was grim.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
Then, about 14 days after the crash, one of Blanc’s neurologists had a unique idea. He bent over Blanc’s bed and asked, “Bugs Bunny, how are you doing today?”. After a few moments of silence, a faint voice replied, “What’s up, doc?”. This was the first sign of Blanc’s consciousness since the accident. This breakthrough led to Mel Blanc’s gradual recovery.
Following this miraculous moment, Blanc began his road to recovery. Using the voices of his beloved characters as therapy, Mel Blanc regained his speech and motor skills. He returned to work within a year of the accident and continued to voice characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and many others until his passing.
Mel Blanc’s remarkable recovery is a testament to the power of determination and the healing effects of something he loved – bringing joy to others through his voice acting. He fully recovered from his injuries and continued his voice acting career. Blanc passed away in 1989 from complications of both emphysema and advanced coronary artery disease.
DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF
His legacy as the “Man of a Thousand Voices” lives on, and his remarkable recovery from a near-fatal accident is a testament to the power of the human spirit. I compiled this from one unknown source and from @VisionaryVoid.
I share a similar story from my past that I wrote about in my book, Life on Your Terms: Create the Life You Want. Pages 135-138 My background in Non-conscious communication, hypnosis and hypnotherapy, meditation and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) were part of my process at the time this took place.
Dion, my dear friend, was in a coma. His mother called and told me he had a 50-50 chance of coming out of it. She asked if I might visit him to see if I could help. I made arrangements and traveled to the hospital. I entered his hospital room and saw him in the bed where he had been confined for some time.
I noticed personal items that were placed about around him, that his family supplied to make it feel more like home. I said hello. I spoke to him as if he were awake and able to respond. I began commenting on the personal items placed around the room. I stated his family wanted him to be comfortable and that they provided these special things.
Within a short period, he opened his eyes and said ‘hi’. I was stunned and elated. I knew his family desperately wanted this moment. I said, ‘Stay right where you are I’ll be right back!’ I ran to get his family. Upon entering the room with them, as soon as they saw him, he closed his eyes and went back inside. For a moment they realized he had been awake but no longer.
From that brief, open eye moment I had with him, he went into coma and never came back out. Everyone was disappointed. I was too. I’d had him right there and had left the room. After they left the room, I started to talk to him again. I knew he could hear me. As far back as the 1970’s, operating rooms in California placed signs reading, ‘Careful, your patient can hear you.’
I talked about important things. I said that I would like to be able to communicate with him and would it be all right to set up some signals? Then, I asked him to lift his little finger for ‘yes’ and to raise his forearm for ‘no.’ My years as a hypnotist came in handy. He responded favorably as I had asked. This was so cool. I asked if he liked where he was inside and he said yes.
Become Alert – Become Aware – There Are Infinite Possibilities
I asked if he was comfortable, and he said yes. I asked if everything was OK, and he said yes. I asked if he felt blissful, meditative and he said yes. A few things he did respond to with a no. It was wonderful to be able to communicate. The hospital put a cot in another room for me to stay so this became my digs for a while.
A day or two day later I was standing outside his room while doctors were inside. They were discussing him and stating that his chances were slim. They were very negative and graphic. One said it was ‘shitty his insides were all screwed up.’ Upon hearing this I entered the room and asked abruptly, ‘Do you think it’s wise to speak about your patient when he can hear you?’
Realize I’m a layperson confronting a number of god-doctors. Immediately they got snotty. ‘What makes you think he can hear us?’ They demanded. I said, ‘because he responds.’ They again asked, with even more disdain, ‘and what makes you think he responds?’ I told them he responded to me. They said, ‘Prove it!’ Boy, did I feel on the spot. I hoped that this would work.
I hoped Dion would communicate. Asking them to step out of the room I described what would take place and how he would answer. We entered the room, and I began asking questions. I asked him if he was comfortable? He indicated yes. I asked if he liked his nurses. He said, yes. I asked if he liked the doctors, his arm went up immediately in a big no. Their jaws hit the floor.
They had stood mesmerized during the questioning process, but now they were beside themselves. From that moment on they treated me as if I were a god. They would tell me what procedures and treatments they planned to do. I kept telling them they needed to tell his family their considerations, not me. A couple days later another new doctor entered the scene.
Your Mind Is Powerful – Fill It With Positivity
He felt Dion was so deep in coma he couldn’t respond. He would not respond to kinesthetic stimulation. Dion remained unresponsive when pricked numerous times around his body with a pointed stick. His nurse said, ‘Let’s get Rex. He can communicate with Dion.’ They found me. I told the doctor the signals. He conducted his test again.
Each time, I would ask, ‘Did you feel that?’ Dion responded correctly each time. He also said no, to the times he was asked, but not poked. This doctor was blown away too. Numerous days later, sadly, my friend died. At the time he needed and had received an organ transplant. For a short while the transplant worked, and he was a new man. WOW you wouldn’t believe the difference.
Then, his body went into rejection. Six weeks afterwards, the very day he returned home, he got symptoms. He went back into the hospital the very next day and soon slipped into coma. At that time, there was an experimental drug that could have been used to treat him. However, they couldn’t administer the medication, by law, until they had secured positive evidence of the particular cause of the rejection he was experiencing.
They knew he was, but they couldn’t find the evidence. Unable to treat him, his body and organs atrophied. All they could do was make him comfortable. Three days before he died, his main physician came to me, again circumventing the family, and said ‘We’ve discovered the issue. We can now get permission to administer the drug.’
Joy Is A Decision – Happiness Is A Choice – Decide To Live Well
I said, ‘This is great news!’ He said, ‘No. By the time we get the permission, it’s likely he will be dead.’ I was terribly disheartened. Three days later he passed. He was a dear friend and I have missed him much through the years. It was a beautiful and bittersweet time. His memorial service brought everyone to tears. He was deeply loved. I share the story for this purpose.
I believe I could communicate with him because I met him and accepted him as he was. I wasn’t family hoping he’d stick around if he chose to go. I believe he was at peace about departing, based on my conversations with him. He awoke and continued to communicate with me because I paced him verbally. I met him where he was at. I completely respected him.
I commented on things that he had in his room. He knew I respected him, and I would let him do whatever he chose to do. He loved his family, but he also knew they wanted him to stick around. I commented on things that were important to him and that created an unconscious rapport. He was able to communicate even when most people think he should not have been. Remarkable.
Most People Miss The Obvious – Because Of The Obvious
My point is the subconscious mind is incredible. There is so much more going on than we understand. The unconscious mind can hear and does listen. It knows what’s going on and pays attention; even when we are consciously distracted, it keeps track. So, it is worthwhile to learn to manage and direct your thinking to eliminate negative thoughts and distractions.
Eliminate negative energy in your life wherever and whenever you are able to. Stay focused on the positive. Know that your brain works on your behalf to keep you alive. It will do whatever it has to, good or bad, right or wrong, supportive or non-supportive, to fulfill that function. Create a wonderful relationship with yourself. Love, honor, and respect yourself.
Amazing creatures we are. We can delight and surprise ourselves in so many ways. Miracles, or what we think are miracles, happen every day, every moment. We ought to live in awe but mostly we pay attention to the annoyances in life. We ought not. We ought to focus on the mystery to be enjoyed, not the puzzles and problems to be solved. Or, at the very least we should do both. Celebrate more. Be grateful. Live fully. Surprise and delight yourself and everything changes. Enjoy the process. The journey is all we have. Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
