“This discussion won’t be exhaustive. That’s true of each of my blogs. There are many factors. However, today I want to address an important one. You are known by your values and actions. Your values simply defined are what’s important to you Examples could be, family, time, finances, fun, health, and business success. You get the idea. Some are more important to you than others.

You might say we have a hierarchy from most important to least. In workshops we often do exploratory discovery exercises to help people identify their top values. Values can also be integrity, honesty, loyalty, compassion and helping others. We can value people, places, activities, things and information. See why this blog won’t exhaust the topic? What’s important to you?

Typically, we describe values with a word or two. Family or helping others. We have our personal understanding of what a value means to us. The same word may have a different meaning to someone else. In theory, we know what’s important to us. What’s important to us is what we spend our energy, attention, time, money and effort to attain. So, this is how we define values.

We can describe them in other ways for sure. We’ve ways we think we can obtain or fulfill our values. We know when we live by them or not. We know when we violate one of ours or someone else’s. I’ll share more in other blogs because we have beliefs, the why’s, reasons and explanations for why we think and do what we do. We’ve ways of operationalizing and testing our values.

Another way to think about this is as strategies for fulfilling them or living from them. We have excuses and reasons why we go counter to our values. We’ve internal conflicts and conflicts with others over them. We defend our values. We attempt to be consistent and not to violate them, but we may. Values give us purpose, shape our behavior and guide us in decision-making.

We may share values with others and frequently our tribes are ones that share many values in common. Because they’re most important to us, we speak about them and are known by them. we can’t help it. We talk about what’s important to us and mostly act consistently in realizing them in our daily life. Actions speak louder than words. We speak and do. Others watch and listen.

DEVELOP THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE, MINDSET AND BELIEFS TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF

What we say and do is always on display. We cannot, not communicate. Our values, beliefs, strategies, means and methods leak from us at all times. We broadcast who we are constantly by what we do and say. We’re known for our decisions, the people we fraternize with, the things we do, the things we say we’ll do but don’t and the results we get.  We are always on display.

That isn’t a bad thing. Understand that in a family, a group of friends or coworkers and in society people understand us by what is important to us and how we behave. We are known by whether we are primarily focused on ourselves or on others. Who do we care about? Are we hurtful or helpful? Are we liars or true to our word? Are we consistent? Are we a ‘good’ person? Get it?

We either walk our talk or we don’t. Our reputation precedes us. YOUR reputation precedes you. People know who you are even if you try to conceal it. They know how we are, who we are, and how valuable our word is. They know whether we keep our promises. Do we say things we won’t follow through on? Do we lie? Are we honest? Do we care about others or only ourselves?

WHO we are speaks loudly. It screams at others. THIS IS WHO I AM AND WHAT I AM ALL ABOUT! You are known by your decisions. As creatures of habit, we are patterned people. We are consistent. Even if we are inconsistent consistently. We are recognizable, liked or loathed because we wear values almost like we wear a suit of clothes. People can tell just by observing.

If something happens once, it may be random. Twice a coincidence. Three times it is likely you are witnessing a pattern or an emerging one. You’ve heard ‘fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.’ Others know who you are. ‘You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.’ This really isn’t about fooling anyone.

This discussion is about integrity and being authentic, but the point is there is no conning a con. Get it? You reflect what you hold most dear. Your words and actions will reveal even when you attempt to conceal. People, wise people, can tell. This blog site is about discovering and living from your authentic self. There’s no need to deceive. There is every reason to be genuine!
