“Do you lose your temper? If you have an issue with anger you need to get it under control. If anger controls you, you’re not in control of yourself. As a result you may encounter problems and situations that take a devastating toll on your happiness and success. Change it!
Because of anger you may seriously jeopardize your relationships, your career and wealth, and your health. You might even jeopardize your safety, and other’s, if you let loose with road rage. If you do you need to realize that you have lost the ability to control yourself.
Learning self-management and anger-management will greatly benefit. It will give you strategies for diverting your wrath into more productive channels. Admit you have the issue. Seek some help if necessary. AND Learn to take some breath and count it out!
If You Really Want To Change You Will Find Or Create A Way
You’ve heard to count to 10 when angry. Well, you might need to count a lot more numbers than just 10, but do it. Put the brakes on your impulse to explode. Don’t think, ‘I won’t get angry’ that’s like saying, ‘I won’t think of a spotted cow’. You get what you resist.
Instead, think ‘calm’. Think, ‘this too will pass.’ Breathe, take breaths. If possible and safe remove yourself politely from the situation. Take a break. Go for a walk and walk it off. Anger is the result of emotional flooding. Your neurology knows the pathways and floods them fast.
In order to prevent it from taking over you need to become aware at the very onset and maneuver to change it. Imagine standing on a steep hill with a car parked about a foot above you. The brakes give out. All you need to do is put your hand on the car and it will stop.
If You Don’t Really Want To Change You Will Find An Excuse
There is no momentum built up. You caught it before that could happen. Now imagine you are 10 or 20 feet away. If the brakes give out you need to jump out of the way. The car would build up speed and be impossible for you to stop as you did before. Get it?
That is what happens in emotional flooding. If you catch it early you can easily divert it. If you let it go, even a few seconds or moments, the momentum of chemicals flooding your body moves you quickly into anger, or explosive anger. Awareness is the key. Notice it!
By deciding and committing to taking a pause, breaths, counting, taking a walk it off session, and getting help you can learn to control this flooding, divert the anger, and respond productively instead of reacting negatively to the situation. Practice these and seek help.
The More You Do The More You Become Capable Of Doing
Create a break-state between the trigger and the flood. Create a gap, a pause, by interrupting the flow of sensations. You can also rehearse mentally how to respond when people get your goat. Repeatedly visualize yourself responding positively and calmly.
Watch yourself behave in new ways. Also, imagine it from your point of view. Imagine looking through your eyes at what or who would have triggered the anger in the past but feeling yourself remain calm, cool and collected instead. Imagine using the break-state.
Also practice and rehearse not correcting or instructing others. Let them be who they are. Stop attempting to control others and much of your anger will diminish. When you relax, let go, forgive and allow others to be imperfectly perfect, a whole lot changes. Get it? Do it!
You Get What You Focus On – What You Focus On Expands
Rehearse successfully taking a pause and using these methods to remain calm. See it, hear it feel it. Rehearse it in your mental movie theater. Daily Meditation and self-hypnosis can help take the edge off. Practice gratitude. Be thankful. Appreciate yourself and others.
