“Most people don’t realize this, but you have incredible power. You have the power that can completely transform your life if you use it. That power is choice. Specifically, it’s the ability to choose your thoughts. This is your superpower, and it’s guaranteed. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been stuck in negative or defeatist thinking; you can decide to change that today. You can choose your thoughts.
If you don’t choose them, your thoughts run you. They already are and they may be leading you in the wrong direction. So, are your thoughts serving you OR are you serving them? Take a moment and really reflect on this question: Are your thoughts serving you? Are you thinking thoughts that improve your life and bring you closer to your goals? Or are you stuck in thoughts that hold you back, make you feel small, or fill you with doubt?
It’s simple. Either your thoughts are serving you, or they aren’t. Either they move you forward, or they keep you stuck. If you’re happy with your progress, fantastic! Keep doing what you’re doing. But if you’re not, you need to change what you’re thinking and what you’re focusing on. Your thoughts dictate your reality. If they aren’t working for you, it’s time to shift gears. Thoughts are contagious. Be careful what you’re spreading.

Here’s the thing: thoughts don’t exist in isolation. They’re like magnets. They attract similar thoughts. Negative thinking tends to snowball, just like positive thinking does. One negative thought doesn’t just stop at one. It leads to another, and another, and soon you’re in a downward spiral of ‘I can’t,’ ‘It’s too hard,’ or ‘This always happens to me.’ Your brain works by association. If you’re thinking poorly that poor thinking multiplies.
It’s not just a single negative thought that pulls you down. It’s a whole flock of them flying together, dragging you into the pit of despair, stress, or self-doubt. One small worry can balloon into overwhelming anxiety if you let it.
Example: Imagine waking up in the morning and immediately thinking, ‘Ugh, today’s going to be awful. I hate my job. I’m probably going to screw up that meeting.’ That single thought sets the tone for the day.
You’ll start noticing every little thing that goes wrong. Your energy will feel drained. You’re priming yourself to feel stressed and defeated before the day even starts. But what if, instead, you woke up and thought, ‘Today might be challenging, but I’m ready. I’ll handle whatever comes my way.” Notice the shift? That thought opens the door for confidence and resilience. It attracts a different kind of energy.

You’re now setting yourself up to tackle the day with strength, instead of defeat. Break the cycle! Choose one positive thought. The good news is you can break this cycle of negativity right now by consciously choosing just one positive, intentional thought. Again, I prefer to call positive thinking Intentional Thinking because you deliberately choose to think productive thoughts.
And that one thought will start a chain reaction of more positive thoughts. Yes, you must be deliberate. If you’ve been stuck in unintentional, negative thinking for a long time, it’s going to take some effort to steer the ship. But the more you practice, the easier it becomes. Let’s say you’re facing a tough situation. Maybe you’re nervous about an upcoming presentation or feel uncertain about a career change.
Instead of dwelling on everything that could go wrong, consciously decide to think, ‘I’m capable of handling this. I’ve prepared, and I trust myself to adapt.’ This one thought will create a ripple effect. It opens the door to more empowering thoughts like, ‘I’ve succeeded in the past, and I’ll succeed again.’ Now, instead of spiraling into doubt and fear, you’re building confidence and optimism. Thoughts are habits, and habits can change.

Most of your thinking is habitual. If you’ve spent years, or decades, thinking negatively, it’s going to feel natural. But just because it’s your current habit doesn’t mean you can’t change it. You can, and it starts with small, consistent choices. For a while, you’ll need to be the chooser. You’ll need to be vigilant about what thoughts you let in and which ones you push out. It’s like training a muscle.
At first, it feels awkward or even exhausting, but with practice, it becomes second nature. Picture your thoughts like a garden. If you’ve let weeds, or negative thoughts, take over, they’ve spread far and wide. It’ll take effort to pull them out and plant new seeds. But if you stick with it, tend to your garden daily, eventually you’ll have a beautiful, thriving landscape that nourishes you. Here’s the bottom line: you are not a victim of your thoughts.
You’re the creator of them. You get to choose, every moment of every day, whether your thoughts will lift you up or tear you down. If you want to break free from the loser mentality, start by choosing better thoughts. You have the power to take charge. When negative thoughts arise, recognize them, challenge them, and choose better ones. It’s simple, but not always easy. The key is consistency. Do it once, then do it again. And again.
