“I hope you read my article on the power of the mind to create both positive and negative results from the research done on the placebo. Notice the interesting thing about the case of Mr. Wright. Mr. Wright was reading the paper. When the paper proposed a ‘cure’ he begged his doctor for that ‘medicine.’ The doctor provided a placebo and he improved. This continued. Then read the cure was bogus.
Mr. Wright died. Consider the implications of this and social media and our media in general. When there’s a pandemic, epidemic or ANY bad news, what does this do to our mindset? How does it affect the consumer of bad news? Given today we are bombarded 24 hours a day. There’s no escaping it. People listen to negativity and fear mongering and internalize it. Placebo. Nocebo. It works. IT works!
Consider what happens with negative news, a disaster or a terrible personal or global event. People watch news all day long, talk about it, think about it, worry about it. They fill their minds with it. DO you think Mr. Wright is the exception? Do you? What we focus on expands. What we think about we bring about. Look at the media and all the news about hate and intolerance. People act on it.
Violence occurs when it’s promoted. Copycats exist. This research suggests that what you think about makes an incredible difference! The case of the young man who took an overdose of placebo pills and had the effect of an overdose as a result, demonstrates that what you think about as pro-vax or anti-vax matters. If you think it is beneficial, then likely it is. If you think it’s harmful, then likely it is.

What we eat affects our bodies ability to generate health. What we consume mentally and emotionally affects our mind and bodies too. There are plenty of people who prove they believe and act on things that are not correct or are untrue but NOT for them. What you expect to find you most often will. If you think something is a problem or an irritant it most likely will be, whether it is or not. Get it?
People may argue this but we’ve lots of research suggesting this is accurate. People die because they think, believe and feel they will. People get healthier or heal because they think, feel and feel they will. Whether you think something may help you or harm you may make an incredible difference for you. That’s whether the ingredients are good or not-so-good for you. It’s the power of belief and attitude!
There are cases around the world where the ‘evil eye’ or a ‘voodoo curse’ is given to somebody, and that person becomes fearful. Some get sick. Some die. It may not be that sticking pins works but for the person who thinks it does, it does. Their reaction determines the outcome, whether a pill or curse has inert ingredients or active ingredients. People heal with placebos. People suffer nocebos.

Whatever you think will happen MORE likely will. That IS the attitude towards the treatment determines the success. Whether the treatment was useful or not, attitude made it useful. There’s a number of placebo studies demonstrating that people who have a placebo surgery, meaning they’re put under and nothing is done to them other than a small incision in the correct area and they experience healing.
They’ve done this on patients requiring knee surgery. Imagine this. They didn’t get the surgery, but they believe they did. Instead of having their knees replaced or fixed, they now walk and move and experience life without pain even when they’ve not had the treatment! This is an incredible power that we all have. We have the possibility to apply this power in our livesbecauseit’s a human power.
It’s the power of our beliefs. It’s the power of our convictions. It’s the power of our attitude. It’s the power of our expectations. It’s the power of the outcomes that we expect! Remember Job stated, ‘what I fear I’ve brought on myself.’ Jesus said, ‘ask, believing you have received and you will receive.’ Mindset matters. A positive, optimistic attitude that expects the best can be unstoppable. Understand?
BUT this Placebo Effect / Nocebo Effect demonstrates that if you don’t use it uses you. If you don’t develop the certainty, the positivity, the optimism in your expectations to move forward ahead successfully and happily with everything that you deserve and could have access to, then by default you’ll not have access to it. It truly seems to be either/or. You can’t sit on the fence.

Nocebo effects with antidepressant clinical drug trial placebos

ABSTRACT:
We describe an individual who experienced unusual negative effects while taking a placebo during a clinical drug trial. A 26-year-old male took 29 inert capsules, believing he was overdosing on an antidepressant. Subsequently, he experienced hypotension requiring intravenous fluids to maintain an adequate blood pressure until the true nature of the capsules was revealed. The adverse symptoms then rapidly abated. The nocebo effect (undesirable symptoms following administration of an inert substance that the patient believes to be an active drug) may have significant negative impacts on certain patients. Further research is warranted to better understand this phenomenon.

Nocebo in fibromyalgia: meta-analysis of placebo-controlled clinical trials and implications for practice

Background: Nocebo refers to adverse effects (AEs) generated by negative expectations that medical treatment will likely harm instead of heal and can be assessed in placebo-controlled randomized clinical trials (RCTs). We examined AEs following placebo administration in RCTs for fibromyalgia (FM), a condition characterized by patients’ poor medication adherence, which may affect outcome and/or increase healthcare costs.
Methods: Following a systematic Medline search for RCTs for FM pharmacologic treatment published between 2001 and 2010, we assessed percentages of placebo-treated patients reporting at least one AE or discontinuing because of placebo intolerance and searched for factors influencing nocebo’s extent. Percentages were compared with those revealed by similar meta-analyses of RCTs for multiple sclerosis and primary headaches.
Results: Data were extracted from 16 RCTs fulfilling search criteria. Of 2026 placebo-treated patients, 67.2% (95%CI: 51.0-81.5%) reported at least one AE, and 9.5% (95%CI: 8.3-10.9%) discontinued placebo treatment because of intolerance. AEs in placebo arms corresponded quantitatively and qualitatively to those in active drug arms (ρ > 0.88, P < 0.0001). Younger age and larger placebo arm size were associated with increased dropout rates. Patients with depression were more likely to withdraw from trials. Nocebo dropouts in FM trials were fourfold and twofold higher than in RCTs for multiple sclerosis treatment and migraine preventive treatment, respectively.
Conclusions: Nocebo is remarkably prevalent in FM patients participating in RCTs. Because nocebo contributes to drug intolerance and treatment failure in clinical practice, identification of predisposing factors and efforts to prevent nocebo by educating these patients appropriately may be important for FM outcome.
The placebo effect suggests your mind can be as powerful in some cases as the treatment itself.
It might be easy to shrug your shoulders whenever you hear someone say “it’s all about mind over matter,” but sometimes, especially with medical research, that’s literally the case. The mind can be a powerful thing that helps your body heal through times of stress and duress, and in some cases, it can be powerful enough to cause what’s known as the placebo effect….
6. SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECY EXCEPTED FROM WORK OF CARL SIMONTON
‘The effects of positive expectancy in a study of 152 cancer patients at Travis Air Force Base, the major Air Force medical facility on the West Coast. Five staff members rated the patients on their attitude toward treatment and evaluated their responses to treatment over the next eighteen months. The results were clear: those patients with positive attitudes had better responses to treatment; those with negative attitudes had poorer responses. In fact, of the 152 patients only two who had shown a negative attitude had a good response to treatment. The most significant finding of the study was that a positive attitude toward treatment was a better predictor of response to treatment than was the severity of the disease. That is, patients who had very serious prognoses but positive attitudes did better than patients who had relatively less serious prognoses but negative attitudes. In addition, patients who began to view their treatments positively often reported reduced side effects.’ …

“The reason you get crappy results are few, simple but pervasive. Two things are possible. 1. You are focused on what you DO NOT want. You think and imagine what you want but really, you’re more focused on what you want to avoid or get rid of AND not what you want. What you think about, you bring about. If you are focused on the opposite of what you want, that’s what you get.
Change this if this is what you are doing. You need to check this and make certain you direct your attention at what you want and imagine living from that. Live as if you already have it in your imagination. Feel it. See it from your point of view. Experience having it within using all your senses. Experience what it’s like to already be it. Experience what it’s like to already be doing it.
Experience what it’s like to already have it. You own it. Feel it. If you already have it you don’t want it because you already are it, are doing it or you already have it. Get this. This is very important because 2. You’re thinking about NOT HAVING what it is you want. You’re in that gap between having it and not having it. A bridge spans both sides. You must be on the side you want to be on, not anywhere else.
Some people don’t realize they/re focused on lack. They think they are focused on what they want but instead are thinking mostly about what they don’t yet have. They notice the distance between where they are, and their goal and they despair. You do not move uphill thinking downhill thoughts. You can’t want something and feel bad about not having it and expect to get it.
You can’t be looking at the gap and feeling great. You can’t be focused on how far you are from the finish line. You need to focus on having already won the prize and how great that feels. Mentally and emotionally excel and give your best. Some people want to speed read books as much as possible to get all sorts of info. It is not about how fast you do something.
It is not about how quick you get success. It is about HOW MUCH TIME YOU PUT INTO getting what you want and the quality of that time. It is better to devote a half hour of concentrated focus on your goals than to be hasty and spend much of your time wanting, wishing, doubting, worrying and afraid you won’t get it. It takes time for seeds to sprout and plants to grow.
The quality of the time spent makes all the difference in your ability to reach your goal more readily and easily. Since it may take time to get what you want the question is how you are spending your time? If you were absolutely certain you had it, how would you think, feel, speak and behave? If you’d won the lottery and they were sending a check on a certain date how would you feel prior to getting it?
A plant is either growing or dying. You’re either mostly positive or mostly negative. To get what you want as soon as possible you need to be mostly positive and optimistic, feeling wonderful most of the time. You can add in positive practices bit by bit that make you feel better and better. You can decide to begin and end each day well. I have given you some ideas for this in other posts.
I’ll share the 2nd ingredient in an upcoming blog. This blog site is devoted to assisting anyone in making changes. There are powerful ideas and principles shared in each article. Re-read this blog and spend time filling your mind with positive ideas. In my workshops we have an added advantage of troubleshooting and answering questions, providing immediate feedback that we don’t have here.

The point is to expect the best and understand that when learning to juggle dropping balls is part of the process. You drop them less and less as you get better and better. If you get upset over dropping balls it only impedes your learning. It doesn’t accelerate your learning to get stressed or fret over skills you are in the process of acquiring. Let go. Have fun. So, you are wishy-washy for a bit. You’ll improve.
Understanding the game of life, the rules and how it’s played is half the battle. Knowing in advance that there will be rough spots, corrections needed, times of doubt, loss of focus, as well as times of ease, exhilaration and celebration help you get through it all. When you have an idea of what you face you can persist no matter what. Again, just have fun learning to improve your ability to stay focused.
While you’re going through the process, accept that you’re in the process. Accept it may take some time. Celebrate that you’re in the process and learning to make the changes you want. Celebrate and be grateful for each moment, good and bad. Celebrate and learn from hardships. The attitude to have is to celebrate everything! Your Attitude IS everything! It makes an incredible difference. Understand!
It is important. Through celebration and gratitude, you will manage your images and self-talk and will move through the process more smoothly and quickly. It WILL be quicker and easier if you understand it and don’t fight it. The point is to think and feel marvelous most of the time. That said, you may fight it anyway. REALIZE you may resist. Realize what you resist persists. Get it. You go back and forth.
Eventually, you will let go and move through it! The best and most important part to learning is learning how to get out of your own way. Stick with it. Enjoy it. In time you will. All ups and downs are PART OF the process. Life is a process. Some people have lots of difficulty because they don’t realize this. Everything changes. Everything passes. Things get worse. Things get better. It’s life. Enjoy all of it. You are alive. Conscious. Realize that it’s a gift to be alive and conscious. Best to act like it. “You don’t have to fail. Failure does not have to be an option. You can move forward into success by keeping certain principles in mind. Some people give up or fail because they don’t realize sometimes some things take time. For everything there is a season. Instead, they quit too soon. Many give up as soon as the going gets tough. They haven’t learned to control their thoughts and feelings.
They forget or ignore the fact they’re in a process. A process is something ongoing. Deadlines are arbitrary but imaginary. We set them and act as if they are real. It’s accurate to say there are some consequences to deadlines in some situations. Some people set a deadline and then if they aren’t where they think they should be at that time, they think they’ve lost. Some give up. Some don’t.
That sort of defeat is momentary. They could simply set another more realistic deadline. It’s been said that ‘there are no unrealistic goals. Only unrealistic time frames or deadlines.’ That means for most dreams within the laws of nature some think things will take too long or that they should happen much quicker. These deadlines may not be realistic for what you are attempting to accomplish.
Reprogram Your Mind & Subconscious
Rome wasn’t built in a day. Be realistic but not dire. Don’t give yourself an unreasonable amount of extra time either. Some people take years to make millions. Some take months, weeks. Some make it daily. Who knows what you might do? It depends on you. How connected are you to others who’d like to help you? How much do you help others? Networks and relationships are a great help to success.
Some get distracted by current circumstances and lose focus. They give in to negative thoughts, self-talk and doubt. They lose faith in their abilities. They’ve not developed the winning attitude. If current events can knock you down, you are giving away your powers to events. Claim your power back and get back up. If you say easier said than done that is the first change you’re going to want to make.
You must have the attitude that come what may I will succeed. I will prevail. I always land on my feet. Everything works out in the end. It all works synergistically. Maintain positive thoughts, feelings and behaviors and you get more from your effort. To LEARN to stay focused you must STAY focused. If you want to learn to cook, you’ve got to cook. If you want to learn to swim, you must swim.
Reprogram Your Mind & Subconscious
If you want to build muscle, you must do the exercise. Consistent, repeated, correct action brings results. Focus on the powerful and positive. Focus on your definite chief aim, your goal and maintain your focus. Stay focused! If you’re wishy washy and go back and forth it takes longer. You must understand, however, that everything you encounter or think, and feel IS part of learning.
Learning means falling and getting up many, many times. It means learning from each time things don’t go the way you hope they will. It means adjusting. It means being flexible and resilient while remaining committed and persistent. You must get back on the horse. When you get off course and make mistakes, correct them. Refocus back each time you realize you have gone astray.
This IS the correction process. As you continue to correct you educate yourself where and how to keep your attention. You grow in the process and ability of making focusing a habit. You also make self-correction a habit. This is necessary. A rocket has a correction mechanism to keep it on course. So does a GPS. You hone your inner GPS for success. Get it. It’s a process. Rome was not built in a day.
Remember, it’s the old habit causing the problem so reprogram your mind and subconscious. There’s no reason to live as a victim to your past, prior conditioning when you can make changes to how you think, feel, speak and act. Your attitude matters so develop one that serves you better. You can’t get different results doing the same things over again. You must make changes that get you what you want to have.’ That’s why taking responsibility for everything is important.
It means you have a greater ability of staying in charge even when you’re not in control of the outer circumstances. Sometimes things go well. It’s like when the shoe fits. You don’t notice it because it fits. Sometimes things go differently than what we hope for. This is when we have the greatest opportunity to learn, change, transform and succeed. We are exposed to experiences we wouldn’t choose.
What to do? Learn what you can from what you did or didn’t do. Get as much feedback as possible and use it. Apply the learning (because otherwise you really haven’t learned anything. To know and not to do is tp not know. Unless you apply it and use it to move forward you didn’t really learn much. Stop thinking about the fish you didn’t catch and focus on the ones caught. Get it? Do what you can.
It’s what Edison, the Wright Brothers, Steve Jobs, Madam Curie and others who are successful do. It is how you improve yourself and thereby improve your future. Life is much better and freer when you can let go and forget about what doesn’t work. Learn from it. Extract the lessons. Maintain focus on what you want and intend to create. Sometimes we strike out. That’s okay, it is part of the game.
Life is a game. When you play baseball, you strike out more than you hit, and far more times than you get on base or a home run. That is just how the game works. If you want to play the game, accept it and don’t let it get you down. Keep your head up. Hold your chin high. Think the best. Feel the best. Be grateful and move forward with positive anticipation for making your dreams come true.
Never quit. Adjust and keep moving forward. This is how you can more easily get what you want. It has nothing to do with pie in the sky wishful thinking. It is about developing an unstoppable ‘I can do whatever I set out to do’ attitude. Defeat along the way will not stop you when your attitude is right. Hardship teaches us and makes us stronger and better. So, keep going. Use your imagination to rehearse making your dreams come true. Create the plan. Then work the plan with joy and ease. “‘Stop flirting with the one you renounced.’ is one of my favorite lines from Elsie Benedict’s book. I love lines like this because they contain so much power that many people miss it. They quote the obvious ones but miss the hidden gems. This is a truly powerful example. If you have ended a relationship, then stop flirting with the person you broke it off with. Stop entertaining or encouraging.
Do you get this? If you are done with poverty, poor health, unhappiness, doubts, worry, fears, anger and negativity then stop giving energy to those thoughts. Stop entertaining them. Stop letting them creep back in. Stop encouraging them by giving them your time and recognition. Cut them off and put your focus on the new. Put an end to the old. Let it go. Drop it. Do something different. Shift focus!
Stop giving credence to the disability, or the lack, or the insecurity, or the anxiety, or the fear, or the doubt that you’ve renounced, that you don’t want, and that you are shifting away from. Stop telling yourself the same woeful stories. Stop the critical and abusive self-talk that you let run rampant whenever things go awry. If you always do what you always did you will always get what you got.
THE PAST DOES NOT EQUAL THE FUTURE BUT ONLY IF YOU STOP PERPETUATING THE PAST! When you drop it, stop it, and let it go, and then think, feel, speak and do new things then you are free to have new and different results. OTHERWISE, you keep repeating the same old stuff. You keep getting the same BS because you keep entertaining and encouraging the same old BS. STOP FLIRTING!
Shift from the negative to the positive. Stop flirting with the negative. Stop entertaining it. Cut it off in the same way you would if you don’t want someone bothering you. The suitor you ended the relationship with. To let the negative thoughts in is to give them your attention. Little attention or big attention doesn’t matter. Energy flows where your attention goes. What you focus on expands.
Stop resuscitating those negative thoughts, words, feelings, and behaviors. Stop! Stop! Stop! AND be different! IF you don’t want someone bothering you DO not encourage them. Don’t flirt with them. Put your attention on what you want to expand. Put it on the good, the kind, the abundant, the loving, the peaceful, the fun, delightful… get it? Encourage and nurture what you want to grow. Get it? Get it?
Here’s an important point. What happens if you stop watering your plants? They wither and die. What happens if you cut off the power supply to your toaster? It doesn’t work. If you JUST STOP entertaining, nurturing and encouraging the thoughts, feelings, speech and behaviors you don’t want WHAT will happen. They will wither away. STOP perpetuating them. Stop giving them energy. Get this!
Interrupt the pattern. Dance, sing, shake, run, jump, shout DO ANYTHING ELSE! Stop perpetuating the old. Stop, drop and roll puts out the flame. Running fans the flames. STOP! DROP! ROLL. Stop feeding the negative energy. Stop the negative thoughts and feelings. Take a deep breath. Jump up and down. Get it. Interrupt the pattern. Stop it. DROP! Laugh, dance, shake… ROLL. Notice> Interrupt> Shift!
I built this into my work more than 40 years ago. It’s part of Mind Design™ and The Attitude Activator™ which helps you easily learn this process. It helps you wire it in through mental rehearsal while you relax. When you are in alpha and theta you reprogram your subconscious and retrain your conscious. Awareness means you notice. Stop the old behavior. Interrupt it. Shift to new wanted ones.
Oftentimes gurus tell you to cut off the naysayers, the Debbie and Donnie Downers, those who rain on your parade. Don’t let these and other energy vampires have their way with you. Okay, fine. Fair enough. I have plenty to say about this now and at another time. FOR NOW, I agree. Cut off anyone who says you can’t do it. Stop listening. Stop entertaining their negative messages. Stop nurturing!
Who is the worst naysayer and energy vampire around? It is you! Stop being critical of yourself. Stop nagging and yelling and abusing yourself. Stop raining on your own parade. Instead, be kind and gentle. Be encouraging and inspiring. Love and accept yourself. Stop the voices of doubt, worry, fear, anxiety, sadness, anger and worse. STOP STOP STOP. Transform yourself. Renew yourself!
Whenever you focus on the less-than-glorious you give it energy. You are watering it and caring for it. You are growing those seeds. Stop. Withdraw the attention. ONLY grow the seeds you WANT and intend to grow that are good for you and others. Become a victor instead of a victim of your own mind. So often, we think some other person is causing the problem when really that other person is YOU!
Get your energy working for you and in the direction that befits you and others. If you keep doing what you are doing that isn’t working WHY WOULD YOU EVER think that suddenly it would just one day work? Stop perpetuating the old and begin perpetuating the new. “I thought I’d share something from Elsie Lincoln Benedict today, especially since we’ve created quite a fever around her work in the Secrets of Success book study. I’ve been quite a fan for quite some time. Her work, as the work of some other significant authors predates so many, we are today familiar with. Elsie had it down for sure. She became a millionaire by age 30. That’s 30 mil today and so much more.
She was a pioneer for getting women the vote and she became a world class speaker. Truly amazing and so few know about it. Anyway, let’s get into the quote I want to share because it’s important. Understand, I keep pointing out that what you think, see, say, feel and do is what you get. If you believe anything, that anything is true for you. As Ford said, ‘if you think you can or you can’t…’
So, get this important quote from ‘How To Get Anything You Want’ and perhaps you will begin to understand why I say CELEBRATE EVERYTHING! Sadly, some people will read a book like hers, or Hill’s or Wattles and get the message that what you say is what you get and then say something stupid such as you must eliminate all negative beliefs, or there is toxic positivity, or you sabotage yourself. Get this.
If what you believe, think, see, say, feel and do is what you get WHAT did they just think, believe and speak. They said you must do something or something is the case without realizing that thought or belief is the very thing they first could change for transformation. If you are unaware of what you are presenting and representing to yourself, you live in a cycle of folly.
If words are important, they’re important. If they aren’t then they aren’t. You decide. Is Ford correct or not? Whatever conclusion you come to you will be correct FOR YOU. You will see or not see possibilities, opportunities or resources based on your beliefs or point of view. We live from our conditioning, but we can change it. We aren’t victims unless we think and act as victims. Get this?
If you think something is hard it will be hard. If you think food is bad for you it is. Learn from what we understand about the Placebo Effect. I’ve gone to it here, in my book and elsewhere so I won’t now, but understand your expectations determine how far you can see, what you find and what you get. YOU determine whether something is easy or not. Good or not? Valuable or not? YOU YOU YOU YOU!!!

There are those who tell you success is slow and hard to come by. You must sacrifice and work hard and sweat, sweat, sweat. If you don’t want it bad enough you won’t get it. Take massive action. It takes time to build wealth. Okay, do you get it? ‘Whereas we build harmful attitudes but slowly, we can build harmonious ones with INCREDIBLE RAPIDITY…. due to the fact…’ Get it. Your attitude matters!
What you find and become capable of depends on what you think about it all. What you feel about it and how you speak about it. Most people think change is hard so guess what they find? Change your thoughts and you transform your life. What one person finds difficult another finds easy or pleasant or rewarding. It’s all in your head.
