“None of us enjoy being wrong. We seek to be consistent in our beliefs. We don’t like it when ideologies conflict. So, we dismiss it before thinking it through. Ask yourself whether your viewpoint is accurate 100% of the time. If you say it is, you suffer a serious thought disorder. It IS called being a dickhead if you assume you are always automatically correct.

Ask yourself honestly, ‘Always? In every single instance? Is what I claim true for everyone, everywhere in all the world and for all time?’ OR ‘Never? Has there never been a single example of it being otherwise? Has no one in the entire world for all time, everywhere, never ever felt differently?’ Get it? You’re looking for counterexamples. You want to find them.

You want counterexamples to counter your own arrogance. You might ask, ‘What causes me to think this way? What examples, evidence or experiences do I have for maintaining this point of view? Are there reasons from my past making it important for me to maintain this position?” Seriously, seek to find counterexamples to free you from repetitive thinking.

‘What would happen, or be the worst that would happen if I didn’t think this? What would happen if I held this person’s point of view? How would I, or the world change if I didn’t believe this? Is it possible there are other points of view?’ Let the grip you hold on your own thinking be loose. Let it go. Stop holding so tightly. Stop clenching.

When you’re willing to give up your ‘right to your opinion’ you are beginning to see more of what matters and what doesn’t. Everyone has opinions. Opinions are meaningless. Like assholes, we all have one. Stop asserting your right to be correct or to be wrong. Stop insisting on being right and be open instead. You can’t hold water in a clenched fist.

To allow in new things you must be open and inviting. Sometimes, you must empty the closet to put new things in it. Be willing to let go of worn-out ideas, beliefs and limitations that don’t serve you or others. Retire them. When you do new, more wonderful ideas start flowing towards you. Allow them in. What you resist persists. Stop the fighting energy.

Be open to welcoming, inviting, and receiving energy. Stop insisting you are right and others are wrong. Some people insist they’re right by thinking they’re wrong or broken. Neither way is good. Stop. Remember, ‘neti, neti.’ It’s ‘not this and it’s not that.’ It is neither. It is beyond both. Get this. Become open and discover delight. Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
