“Negativity Bias is misnamed. It isn’t negativity the brain is biased for, rather it’s survival bias. The brain evolved to look for what’s wrong in the world that could harm us. Not negativity. Survival bias is a positive resource for keeping us safe. Thank goodness we have it.

But we misunderstand and mis-use this sad this term which gets bandied about. Our brain looks for threat and danger. It scans for these. It doesn’t scan for negativity. We are conditioned towards negativity having been born and grown up with influencers.

Parents, peers, educators, media all teach us that bad exists. News shows it to us repeatedly. Negativity is conditioned in us through persistent repeated negative messages. We do gawk at accidents and gossip about bad things but our brain evolved to survive.

You Get What You Focus On – What You Think Most You Become

When threatened we react with fight, flight or freeze in order to correct the situation. The physical threats living in nature we’ve dealt with as a species may have become fewer in the urban world but some are still there. However, most today are emotional threats.

We perceive these as life threatening. We react similarly. We fight, flee of freeze. Some people continue to live from danger and threat out of habit more than others. They worry about lack, debt, poor health, loss of relationships, things, reputation and more from habit.

We’ve been conditioned to do this. This IS what we need to change. We need to change our conditioning and habits. We need to recondition ourselves toward positive productive thinking, emotional and behavioral habits. Good news is we can. Some do.

Change Your Thoughts And You Can Change Your Life

Others do not. Everyone can. If only they will. Will you? The reason why we notice these threats and the conditioned negativity so easily is that dangers to us have a greater signal value. They threaten our survival and puts our comfort zone at risk.

Positive stimuli has less signal value because it doesn’t threaten us. This is why we NEED to learn to shift from survival mode to positive mode by conditioning ourselves to learn new positive habits. We can make our brains look for, and find, good things too. We train it!

It’s a great benefit to train your mind to find good in every situation and to discover you have the resources to handle any challenge. The brain will still  alert you to danger appropriately but you will loosen its grip on keeping you fearful, doubtful, angry and depressed.

Your Present And Future Depend On What You Decide Right Now

You will condition yourself to be far less enamored with negativity and instead of reacting as you did in the past from habit, you can train yourself to respond appropriately with positive confidence and  power. Isn’t that a worthwhile trade off? For many, yes. And you?

Wouldn’t you like to be more powerful, positive and productive? Wouldn’t you prefer happiness to sadness, positivity to negativity, courage instead of fear, fun instead of worry?
