“Why do we practice anything? Why does one practice skiing, swimming, surgery, or basket weaving? To improve obviously. To get better. How do we practice? By correctly repeating what it is we intend to improve. Obvious, again, right? But there is a point here.
Skill comes of doing. Repetition is the mother of skill. However, we don’t repeat simply for repeating. When we throw darts or go bowling if we simply repeated what we do while playing we’d improve our errors. We would suck better! Get it? It’s true.
Think about it. You get better through practice and repetition because when you repeat you correct what you did. You take feedback from your gutter ball, or throwing your dart into somebody’s back and make adjustments. You correct what you do.
Confidence Comes With Competence – Skill Comes From Doing
You improve because you attempt it, get results, make adjustments, do it again, adjust, on and on. Get it? Anything you improve at, riding a bike, driving a car, knitting, public speaking you get better at through this process of repetition, feedback and correction.
The same is true with your mindset. Some talk about positive thinking and are down on it. Others, are annoyed with affirmations. Still, the same process applies to your thinking. If you want to improve your thinking you practice thinking new thoughts.
If you want to improve your attitude you practice new attitude. You get feedback for your thoughts, attitudes and beliefs along the way. You either see, hear or feel it within, or you get certain results outside. You make adjustments as necessary until you improve it all.
The More We Do The More We Become Capable Of Doing
Get it? A guided rocket ship or airplane is off course much of the time but continues adjusting to incoming feedback to get to the intended destination. Practice your mindset, your attitude, your feelings, self-talk and behaviors successfully! Use feedback.
You start off missing the mark, the dart, the bowling pins, the positive attitude, but your brain learns from feedback as you make corrections. Your misses become fewer, your hits become more frequent. Your skills improve. Shift from negative to positive!
Adjust and repeat. You’ ll get better and better along the way. This is why we practice. This is how we improve. We attempt, get feedback, correct and redo. We continue to do correct practice (this process) repeatedly, for long enough, consistently, until we develop an automatic, reliable, supportive positive habit! Get it? This IS how it works.
