“Sometimes we feel down and out, sad, fearful, frustrated, anxious, confused or simply negative. We all have those moments or those days. For some it seems to last longer. Interestingly, research suggests the feeling only lasts 90 seconds but we keep it lingering.

We feel bad and then think about how we feel bad and then feel worse. In other words we perpetuate the bad feelings after the initial bad feeling has left us. Instead of moving on, we keep the experience alive. We can learn to change this and feel better.

In my last blog I shared about practice and repetition. If we make mistakes and repeat the mistakes, think about the mistakes and feel a failure, we perpetuate the mistakes and those feelings. We spiral down and keep negative things going. There is a way out.

What We Want To Do With Ease We First Must Do With Diligence

Remember, feedback! The negative thought or feeling or mistake is feedback. It is an alert. Instead of focusing on the alert signal or the mistake we adjust, we correct and we shift. Then, we focus on the shift. We move from negative to positive and repeat the positive.

By repeating the correction we make and validate the correction. By focusing on what we want instead of what we don’t want we get more of what we want! Yes, you actually have to make the shift. You may or may not feel like making it but that is what you must do.

If you want to change you can’t keep repeating the things that keep you stuck. You must practice new thoughts, feelings, self-talk and behaviors. That is how you get out of the funk states and problems. Notice the alert, become aware. Then shift. Focus on the opposite.

What You Focus On Expands – Thoughts Become Things

The alert was there to draw your attention to it so you could correct it. Remember, guidance machines, rockets, aircraft, GPS operate off of feedback. They continually correct to stay on the right course. We can do the same. That is how we develop skills and abilities.

Winning breeds more winning. Focusing on failing brings more failure. You have to make a decision as to where you will put your attention and energy. Then you must follow through. Repeat the correct behavioral shifts enough to make them new positive habits. Get it? I’m sure you do. celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
