“Want to feel better in mind, body and spirit? There’s an amazing connection between movement and brain stimulation and development. When babies crawl they are making essential movements, they are ‘cross crawling’ moving both sides of their body in sequence and that helps stimulate, enrich and develop the brain. It’s a precursor to walking but it is more than that.

Unfortunately, many parents want to hurry their child’s ability to walk instead of letting them take all the time necessary to crawl and wire in these changes. So for future parents reading this, let them crawl and crawl until they naturally begin to pull themselves up and walk. There is a unique power in walking for the adult for the adult and that is to continue to cross crawl frequently.

Especially in this day and age when we sit for work most of the day. It’s why researchers suggest about 10k steps for better physical, mental and emotional health. Sitting is said to be the new smoking and takes its toll on the spine, the body, weight management and mood among other things.  Cross crawling, or moving the opposite arms and legs engages both hemispheres.

In all of my live workshops, and even in my online Mind DEsign™ and Ultimate NLP™ Home Study Course I demonstrate and encourage and provide cross crawling exercises. It is even more effective if you actually make contact with the opposite part of the body. For example right hand crosses body to touch left shoulder of knee and left does same with right side while moving.

Each step, each cross crawl especially with the touching encourages brain development, neural pathways and neuroplasticity. So walk or perform cross crawling exercise that I suggest. Walking helps you physically by keep your joints lubricated. This is important for all of us. Water walking is another wonderful exercise. It proves less impact and some resistance. I love it. You can too.

Walking activates or helps supply oxygen and nutrients to the areas that need it. Your cartilage, joints and muscles. You don’t have to power walk. You can walk at a normal pace where you don’t get winded. Best to walk outdoors and get fresh air and look off into the distance. The treadmill in inclement weather is fine, but don’t read, or talk on phone. Take a break and walk.

Walking after a meal is wonderful. It can reduce blood sugar and aid in digestion. Again, walk don’t exercise so you interfere with digestions. Walk. Move. Do simple cross crawling exercises. Walking after meals is a double win. It aids digestion and blunts blood sugar spikes. A post-meal stroll can reduce blood sugar by up to 50% compared to sitting.

Keep your body moving after meals. The brain and body were designed to move. We evolved moving in the plains and forests foraging for food. Hunting and gathering. We moved until we slept it appears. Then repeated it. The brain and body is a use it or lose it phenomenon. Muscles and the brain atrophy when not used or stimulated.

Space travel revealed that astronauts muscles atrophied in zero gravity. It’s why they exercise in space. Make walking a habit. Walk with friends or alone. At times, listen to audiobooks. The best are those that inspire and stimulate you to feel better and better. Park further away to take more steps. Walk to the store or a friends house when you can. Stroll in the park or along a beach.

See the sites. Look off into the distance. Look at the horizon. Change what you see. Many people only see the insides of their home and office, the tv or computer at a set distance. Change it up. If at work or home stand up about every 20 minutes. If possible look out the window or as far away as you can indoors. Get some fresh air and sun.

If at first you don’t enjoy it, or it is difficult keep at it. It gets easier and more fun. You’ll move more and ‘grease the wheels’ and ‘shake off the cobwebs.” You’ll feel better and benefit more and more the more and more you do it. Our ancestors walked much more than we do. We should do more. It’s healthy, it doesn’t take a toll on your joints and tissue because it is low impact.

Water walking adds resistance. Mail carriers were rarely obese when they carried the mail and had greater endurance. They weren’t specifically bulked up or ripped but they were fit and had endurance. It is free to walk. You can do it most anytime. Nothing special needed except some good shoes. AND walk barefoot when able. It is great to contact the earth with your bare feet. It’s healthy too! Make up your mind to be fit in mind, body and spirit. Cross crawl by walking or by doing specific contra-lateral exercises. Enjoy it and celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
