“There are a few things we can do to help prevent ourselves from going down the habit rabbit hole of overthinking, paralysis by analysis, and less-than-glorious self-talk. I share them in this and perhaps another blog or two. First, know that I can help you and if you put these practices into practice you can get the relief and freedom you want and deserve. Follow these instructions.

Understand that our brains are wired through conditioning. That is just the way it is. It isn’t your fault your brain works as it does, nor is it your fault you were conditioned by others while growing up. Accept that your brain is hardwired to do certain things to help you survive and thrive. Accept this and accept yourself. Accept you and everyone else gets conditioned. It’s not your fault.

Don’t give it any more attention than you already have. We have been hardwired through evolution to squirt brain chemicals in reaction to outer and inner stimuli. When we feel threatened we release chemicals to fight, flight or freeze. These chemicals flood our being so we react to survive. Sometimes we get in a loop and feel chronically stressed. This can create dis-order and dis-ease.

That’s not healthy and blaming yourself isn’t any healthier. So accept it for what it is and decide to make use of it as best you can. Take some deep breaths. Relax and let go. Our thoughts and beliefs and memories or associations are woven together within. One thought can lead to another and another. If they are negative you spiral down. If positive you can spiral up. Things are anchored.

Thoughts, memories, feelings, experiences are tied together so one negative thought can lead to another seemingly random negative memory. They may have nothing to do with each other but they fire together. You may make connections or meaning about these connections that may not even exist. You think it does because of the proximity of them coming forth. They aren’t connected.

Still, you might make some fabricated connections. Repetition wires these things in. The more you do this kind of thinking the more likely you are to repeat it. That is how we develop habits. SO even not relevant memories can seem relevant and then we create another story about it. We may think ‘see I really am a loser.’ When you are not. You can break this cycle and create freedom.

How? Through awareness. When you first begin to notice the negative thought or feeling you have the opportunity to break the flood, or stop the flood of interconnected random less-than-glorious other thoughts, memories or feelings. If you let it go and repeat it you will likely repeat it in the future again and again. So, when you notice STOP and breathe. Take a few deep breaths. Move!

When your mind starts accelerating with negative associations and feelings STOP and breathe. RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT is the time to interrupt the pattern. As early as you can. Of course, you may find yourself down the rabbit hole any number of times but with correct practice, you will begin catching it earlier and earlier. You can catch it, interrupt it and slow it down or put it on pause.

When you find yourself getting negative or down or fearful or angry or over-thinking and your mind is racing STOP and breathe. Move around. Focus on your breath. Focus on the movement. Put your attention on your surroundings. What are you seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting or smelling? Remove your attention and energy from the cascading stinking thinking and bad feelings. Take charge.

Stay with it until you are calm, relaxed and free of it. At first, it could take 10 minutes or more. It certainly can take less too and will as you wire in the new awareness and habit. Take some deep slow breaths because deep slow breathing is relaxing. Your body and mind will calm down. Shift your focus to positive thoughts. Find something to feel grateful about. Feel the gratitude. Get it.

Stop doing what you were doing. Interrupt it and begin doing something new and different that sends your mind and body in a different positive and optimistic direction. Change course. Get this. Stop and shift. Pivot. Turn around. However, you want to consider it is fine but CHANGE IT! Then don’t talk about it. Don’t go back to it. Leave it alone. What was, was. NOW, what is, IS!

STOP. Focus on the good and the positive. Speak only to bless, heal, prosper, transform, transcend, edify and uplift. focus on the good. If you talk about what was a problem you might go back into it. Resist the urge to report out to others as well. History is not relevant here. Let it go. Shift and find the good. Live in the good and the gratitude. Let the appreciation, appreciate.

Don’t let others pull you into it by talking about it with you either. Rise above. You got free. Focus on the freedom and remaining free, not that which had you bound up or stuck. My formula for 40 years has been AWARENESS. Notice it. STOP! Interrupt the pattern. Get into NEUTRAL. Let it all go. Relax. SCAN for resources or look for the positive. SHIFT into the resources. Feel resourceful.

Feel the positivity. Embrace it. Wrap it around. Walk around feeling wonderful. Dance, skip, sing, celebrate. You were headed for disaster but you NOTICED and TOOK CHARGE and the steps to avert it. You redirected your attention and energy from less-than-glorious into the glorious. WOW, cool/ Celebrate even more. Pat yourself on the back. You dodged the bullet. You made the change.

Congratulate yourself. Repeat as needed. The more you do this the more you create new habits. As you repeat this process you wire in the new positive skills, abilities, direction, awareness and resourcefulness that becomes reliable and automatic. You eventually become unconsciously competent with the new thoughts, feelings, words and behaviors WHICH get you new results! WOW! What a trade-off. You lose negativity and discover positivity and resourceful thinking, speaking, feeling and behaving. Is that not wonderful? Of course, it is. Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
