‘The most dangerous psychological mistake is the projection of the shadow onto others: this is the root of almost all conflicts.’ Carl Jung.’

“I agree and submit: The most dangerous psychological mistake is to assume there is a shadow at all and project it onto self or others. There is no shadow. There is no shadow side. There is no person living inside your brain. There is brain matter in there. No shadow.

We anthropomorphize animals and we do similarly to ourselves. There is no shadow. However, if you believe there is you will act as if there is. Perception is everything. Our beliefs determine what we see and do. If we believe something is true, we act as if it’s true.

Still, there is no shadow or human in your brain. There is no angel or demon on your shoulders. There are electrical chemical processes and neural pathways that are laid down by repetition which become our habits. This IS how we think, feel and behave. There’s no ego.

There’s no shadow. Those are merely constructs or myths, stories, to explain why we do what we do when we do it. They are fabricated reasons. ‘It’s not me. It’s my shadow self.’ or ‘I sabotage myself.’ or ‘A part of me rejects that while another part accepts that.’ Get it?

There is no inner child nor any wounded adult. There are electrical chemical habitual processes that fire according to triggers within or without us. We react and then make up explanations for why we think, feel or act as we did. Stop being a victim to your thinking.

Understand, you have the capacity to act in positive ways. You can act legally. You can act negatively and/or in unlawful ways. How you justify it depends on the conditioning you have been and are being exposed to. The stories you believe are just stories.

Freud, Jung and others from early philosophers on have proposed theories and stories for why we do what we do. It is more honest to simply state, ‘I did it. Hence, I am responsible for it.’ BUT we don’t. We come up with stories to alleviate responsibility. We blame.

‘It was my other self.’ ‘It was someone else. They caused me to do it.’ ‘God, why are you doing this to me?’ ‘The universe hates me.’ Etc. We make excuses and blame ourselves and others. So, Jung is partially right. We do project onto others and are wrong about why.

We project onto others after we first project onto ourselves. Stop the projection and we can get clearer about ourselves. We are miraculous complex beings. We’ve infinite potential and possibilities. We can make more neural connections than are stars in the sky.

Yet, we live with stories and tall tales about how we’re limited or conflicted.  Start telling better stories if you must tell stories. Stop telling stories of how you’re broken or not working well and begin to tell stories of how talented you are to make positive changes.

Tell stories of how you can succeed, be happy, love others and have loving positive relationships and a marvelous life. The other stories are made up but influence you because you bought into them. Buy into better, more creative, positive stories. Tell better stories!

Psychological stories about how or why you are broken don’t help you to be better. They help you get into therapy. That’s true. They don’t promote wellbeing and self-love or love for others. They don’t promote innovation, positive possibilities or right action.

Change Your Thoughts And You Transform Your Life

Let go of the ‘why’ myths. Let go of these fabricated causes. If you have to believe something, believe the best about yourself, not the worst. And stop putting your worst onto others, too. Start accepting responsibility. Do something about making your life better.

When you will, everything can change. Until then, you’ll just keep living from old habits that keep you the same. This is important to understand. If you want to BE different you can’t keep doing and thinking and feeling the same things repeatedly.

For you to change, you must change what you are thinking, feeling and doing! Your beliefs matter. They direct what you notice and how you act. What you focus on you expands. Stop believing those lies. If you must believe in lies then tell ones that make you a better, more loving, kind, positive, successful person. Tell useful lies that serve you better to make you, others and the world better. Get this and great doors of possibility open for you. Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
