“He was so positive he scared me. So he told me what to do. He gave me the first step. ‘Oh, you don’t understand.’ I’d exclaim. ‘I can’t do that.’ I’d proceed to tell him why. He’d nod understandingly and explain that I could do that or do this other thing. He didn’t care.

It was up to me to care. ‘Oh no,’ I’d say. ‘I am willing to do anything else,  but not that.’ I didn’t want those lessons or could not see the value of pursuing a particular area. Time and time again he would make suggestions. Most I would negate. Some I would try.

Usually abandoning whatever it was he had me doing. He never complained. He completely accepted me resisting him. He never threw up his hands or told me he would not continue. Our relationship lasted many years but it changed. He was great.

He was scary. There was nothing wrong any of the things or lessons he attempted me to pursue. I just didn’t think they fit me or would benefit me as he did. I didn’t let go of my limitations. I didn’t adjust my mindset. I didn’t really give in. I wasn’t really teachable.

I left him to find someone who could help me, but didn’t. We remained friends until he moved. Then lost touch. Years later read an article announcing he died. I was greatly sad we hadn’t remain in  touch the rest of his life, BUT I made my choices. He was right.

When is the student ready? A student becomes ready when the student’s teachable. I wasn’t teachable. I thought I knew what I needed and what I was willing to do.. I wasn’t open to actually letting go of my beliefs and trying on things foreign to me. I was stuck.

To say, ’Yes, but,’ and ‘no, you don’t understand,’ and then provide reasons is really nothing more than making excuses. Excuses ARE excuses and nothing else! The only one to lose out was me for not taking chances, trusting and applying what I was supposed to learn.

You have to ask yourself, ‘how teachable am I?’ Many people say, ‘I am willing to learn anything.’ BUT when the rubber hits the road they actually aren’t. I wasn’t. How teachable are you? How willing are you to change? I’m not talking about dangerous things here.

How willing are you to change what you think and what you are doing to think and do something new? Think on this. How far would you legally and safely go? When we confront our limitations it can be scary. It usually is. What we must learn is scary, AND scary is U part of changing! More next time. Meanwhile, celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
